The Atlantic Sea-Park (Template:Lang-no) is an aquarium in Ålesund, Norway. It was founded in 1951 as a limited company. In 1967, it moved into its permanent premises in the basement of the "Fishermen House" near Brosundet. Since 1975 the Ålesund Aquarium, with the help of government grants, was defined as "natural history". [1]
In 1976, the Ålesund Aquarium Foundation was founded. About the same time, the first plans for a new aquarium in Ålesund launched. After more than 20 years of planning the new Ålesund Aquarium open in Tueneset under the new name of Atlanterhavsparken.[1]
The Atlantic Sea Park is one of Scandinavia's largest saltwater aquariums and one of the leading tourist attractions in the area. The Aquarium was officially opened June 15, 1998 by the Norwegian royal couple during Ålesund 150 year anniversary.[1]
The facility is built into the coastline of Tueneset, approximately 3.5 km west of Ålesund, and offers nearly 4,000 sqm public and exhibition space, plus 6,000 sqm outside area with fishing places, trails, beaches and fine dive sites.[1]
The Atlantic Sea-Park is a scientific & cultural facility dedicated to conveying experiences and knowledge about life in the ocean. The exhibition area includes 11 larger landscape aquariums, including 2 open touch pools, 2 activity pools and several smaller aquariums that provide a representative view of life under water along the Norwegian coast and in the northern Atlantic.[1]
This viewing area showcases marine life from all coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in the waters surrounding Norway. Species are selected that dwell in various ocean depths, including marine life from deep water habitats. In order to withstand the pressure at the depth at which these were installed, the panels needed to be cast 10 inches thick (over 25 cm). The nearly seamless bonds mean that visitors to the park get a nearly unimpeded view of the underwater world beyond.
