Plot
Alice (Mia Wasikowska), now 17 years old,[3] attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. She runs off, following the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before, yet doesn't remember. Wonderland was a peaceful kingdom until the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) overthrew her sister, the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The creatures of Wonderland, such as the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas) and the March Hare (Noah Taylor), ready to revolt, wait for Alice to help them. With the help of the White Queen, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman).
Cast and characters
- Wonderland residents
- Johnny Depp as Tarrant Hightop, or, The Mad Hatter[5]
- Helena Bonham Carter as Iracebeth, or The Red Queen.[6] To avoid confusion, the character is a mixture of the Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen. Helena Bonham Carter's head will be increased in size by three times on screen.[7]
- Anne Hathaway as Mirana, or, The White Queen. Her character does not require digital manipulation.[8] Hathaway summed up her character with a caption on a magnet of Happy Bunny holding a knife; "Cute but psycho. Things even out."[9] Her character also doesn't walk, "she floats. She's very eccentric and over dramatic, and just as mad in her way as the Hatter".
- Michael Sheen as Nivens McTwisp, or, The White Rabbit[10]
- Alan Rickman as Absolem, or, The Caterpillar. Rickman was filmed while recording his voice in a studio, and his face will be composited onto a stop motion character.[11]
- Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat.[12][13]
- Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Lucas' face was digitally inserted for both characters, while the body was computer-generated.[14]
- Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock[15]
- Noah Taylor as Thackery Earwicket, or, The March Hare
- Barbara Windsor as Maylmkun, or, The Dormouse[16][17]
- Timothy Spall as Bayard Hamar, or, the Bloodhound
- Crispin Glover as Ilosovic Stayn, or, The Knave of Hearts[6]
- Paul Whitehouse as Uilleam, or, The Dodo [18]
- Real world residents
- Eleanor Tomlinson as Fiona Chataway, an unfriendly girl Alice knows before she falls down the rabbit hole.[19]
- Jemma Powell as Margaret Manchester[20]
- John Hopkins as Lowell Manchester
- Lindsay Duncan as Helen Kingsley[21]
- Marton Csokas as Charles Kingsley[22]
- Frances de la Tour as Aunt Imogene
- Leo Bill as Hamish Ascot[23]
- Tim Pigott-Smith as Lord Ascot
- Geraldine James as Lady Ascot
Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter's children will have cameos in the film.[24]
Production
Joe Roth was developing Alice in Wonderland in April 2007 at Walt Disney Pictures with Linda Woolverton as screenwriter.[25] Woolverton added a socio-political context to the story.[1] That November, Burton signed with Disney to direct two films in Disney Digital 3-D, which included Alice in Wonderland as well as a stop-motion remake of his earlier short, Frankenweenie.[26] He explained "the goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of Alice." He also felt 3-D was appropriate to the story's environment.[5] The film was originally set to be released in 2009, but was pushed to March 5, 2010.[27]
The original start date was May 2008,[26] but filming did not begin until September and finished in December after only 40 days.[2] Scenes set in the Victorian era were shot at Torpoint and Plymouth from September 1—October 14. Two hundred and fifty local extras were chosen in early-August. Locations included Antony House in Torpoint, Charlestown, Cornwall and the Barbican.[28][29] Motion capture filming began in early October,[14] at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.[1] Sony Pictures Imageworks is designing the visual effects sequences.[30] Burton and Zanuck chose to film with conventional cameras, and convert the footage into 3D later; Zanuck explained 3D cameras were too expensive and "clumsy" to use, and they felt that there was no difference between converted footage and those shot in the format.[31] Filming also took place at Culver Studios.[32]
In June 2009, the first pictures of the film were released, showing Depp as the Mad Hatter, Hathaway as the White Queen, Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.[2] A new image of Alice was also released.[4] In July, new photos emerged of Alice holding a White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter with a Hare, the Red Queen holding a pig, and the White Queen with a mouse.[33] In July 2009, a teaser trailer was released on IGN and was posted on Perez Hilton's website. The trailer is from the Mad Hatter's point of view. The trailer was shortly taken off Perez's site.[34] The following day, the teaser trailer premiered at the ComicCon. In July 24, the Teaser was released on Apple's iTunes store for free downloading.[35]
Casting
On choosing Mia Wasikowska, Tim Burton states:
We met a lot of people, but she just had that certain kind of emotional toughness, standing her ground in a way that makes her kind of an older person but with a younger person's mentality.[36]
Video game
Disney Interactive Studios announced on July 23, 2009 that a video game based on the film will be released in early 2010 for the Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.[37] An iPhone version is due to be released in late 2009.
