According to the Trikaya doctrine, Vairocana (also Vairochana or Mahavairocana, Jp. 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai) is the cosmic embodiment of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and the center of the Five Wisdom Buddhas.
Vairocana is the central figure of esoteric Shingon Buddhism in Japan, which is based largely on the teachings of the Mahavairocana Sutra. The Vairocana statue in Nara's Todaiji is the largest bronze Buddha in the world.
