Untitled

Headstrong is the debut album by Ashley Tisdale. The album was released on February 6, 2007, in the United States via Warner Bros. Records, debuting at #5 on the Billboard 200 and selling 64,000 copies in the first week.[1] In the U.S, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA for shipments of 500,000 units[2] and has sold 471,000 copies as of June, 2009.[3] The album's first single was "Be Good to Me" features David Jassy and the second was "He Said She Said". "Not Like That" and "Suddenly" were released in selected countries as the third and fourth singles from the album. Tisdale supported the album with the High School Musical: The Concert and Headstrong Tour Across America.

Album information

In September 17 2007, the album's second single, "He Said She Said" was re-released. Tisdale was mainly determined to record songs that touched her personally and that contained lyrics she could identify with. Tisdale also admitted that the album was called Headstrong because she is a headstrong type of person.[4]

The album generated mixed reviews. Oye! Awards (Premios Oye! in Spanish) nominated Tisdale in the category International Breakthrough Artist of 2007. The album was #6 on "Album of The Year" by Billboard Readers' Choice.[5] In Japan, the album was released twice in two editions.[6] The album was certified Gold in Brazil selling 50,000 copies.[7]

Promotion

Tisdale performing at the High School Musical: The Concert

Tisdale performed several songs from the album at the High School Musical: The Concert tour.[8] Tisdale also performed "Be Good to Me" and "He Said She Said on several American TV programs to promote the album. Warner Bros. Records posted a commercial for the album, which was in rotation on television. The music video for "He Said She Said" promoted Eckō Red. In January 2007, Tisdale started a mall tour, Headstrong Tour Across America in which Tisdale had a Eckō fashion show and performed three songs from the album. She performerd in several commercial centres in the United States.

The album was re-released in the Christmas of 2007 in a Holiday Edition with the standard CD, the There's Something About Ashley DVD in a digital format and included some merchandise. The holiday edition became available again in 2008 for the holidays.[9] The album was re-released again in a limited Deluxe Edition format in Germany with the DVD.[10]

Critical reception

An All music review said that "Headstrong's sound is much more mature than the soundtrack's teen pop-meets-musicals vibe, incorporating heavy hip-hop beats, dancehall's call-and-response, Middle Eastern elements, and other mid-2000s pop music trends into the Disney pop sound."[11] A Blender review said Tisdale "doesn’t import much of her character’s pushy spunk in this transition from Disney to dance-pop."[12]

Jamie Ross of Wild Life said: "It is hard to ignore a good pop album. There is just something about a song's dance-ability that brings out the best moods and moves in a person. Most of these albums, however, are dragged down by the ballads usually scattered throughout. This is the case with Ashley Tisdale's first solo release, Headstrong."[13] Commonsense Media called the lyrics "family-safe, but unsubstantial, flirting around the edges of sexual innuendo on a couple of tracks", and Tisdale "comes across as cute, fun, and buoyant -- anything but headstrong". While the music is, "rhythmic and catchy".[14]
