In TV Episode 1, Sawako says, "「軽い音楽」と書いて、軽音よ", meaning "Keion is written as 'light' music". as the word "軽い" refers to, this term can be translated as "relaxing music". So additional, personally, I consist that the difference between "light music" and "'light' music" is just a stuff of words' different meanings in different languages. So what about 軽音楽? Can this be a reliable source? Honestly I didn't know western light music before i viewed this page. In last 2 paragraphs, it explains Japanese "light music"(where as above explains western light music. Here is a simple translation: Additional, light music can also be inferred as a genre of pop music that is different from classic or ordinary music. For example: when light music is used in such occasions: NHK's "light music audition" and "light music for you"(NHK-FM programme in past years), circles in schools such as "light music club", "light music fanclub", etc. There are schools in which both "light music club" and "music club" exists, in these cases, "light music club" plays rock, funk or jazz targeted genre, oppositely "music club" plays orchestra and choir. Isn't there any policies dealing with this special situation? The fact is all Japanese regard "light music" as A, while westerners think "light music" is B. But when it comes to international communications, Japanese people know to use words other than "light music"(such as pop music) to avoid confusion. Thus no articles or comments in English discussing this word. And for Japanese who want western light music then he will stress on european or british, etc. And for academic communications, Japanese light music is not a genre thus no confusion as well. It seems all resposibility is on the Japanese-English(and English-Japanese) dictionary editors.(Maybe some kinds of huge dictionaries give the right answer but most of them are not available on Internet) However if we just simply compare the item "light music" on an authoritative English dictionary and the item "軽音楽" on an authoritative Japanese dictionary(assuming both Japanese and English can be read), the answer is right there.
