People
The bulk of the Jharsuguda population is made up of the Oriya people (the native people of Orissa), but the recent years have seen the town developing rapidly, which has allowed many other Indian groups to migrate to this place. These groups include Bengalis, Biharis , Marwaris, Gujrathis, Punjabis etc. In fact, the industries like Vendanta have appointed many Chinese people from China to work for them and it has been estimated that by the end of the year 2009 about 120 Chinese families will settle here. The ethnic group list of Jharsuguda is dominated by the Hindus, who form about 86% of the city's population and the rest 14% is made up by the Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and traces of Parsees.
Language
Main Language is Sambalpuri! In spite of the fact Jharsuguda is a part of Orissa, the lingual dominance of the language Oriya is not seen here. This is mainly due to the reason that the city lies in western Orissa. Moreover, it lies very close to the Orissa–Chatisgarh border, which gives way for the city to have the minimal influence of the state language (i.e. Oriya). So as far as the language of Jharsuguda is concerned, Hindi is the dominant language of this city.
Economy and Infrastructure
This cosmopolitan town is fast emerging as the economic hub of western Orissa and there is a vision of master plan for the city by the state Govt[3]. Currently, many small- and medium-scale steel units are being set up in the town vicinity, primary being Bhushan Power & Steel Limited (Thelkoloi village, Sambalpur district), SMC Power Generation Ltd., Action Ispat Ltd., Eastern Steel & Power Ltd., SPS Steel & Power Ltd. A few large scale units of Vedanta Alumina Ltd and Utkal Alumina International Ltd will be setting up units in the area
- Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL), currently setting up a 0.5 million tonne aluminium smelter and 675 Mw captive power plant at Jharsuguda in Orissa, has chalked out massive 4.6 billion dollar expansion for the project.[4]
- Reliance Energy Ltd has proposed to set up a 12,000 mw thermal power plant at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore (Rs 480 billion) at Hirma in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa.[5]
- Sterlite company is developing a 2,400 MW power plant at Jharsuguda.[6]
- The Centre plans to set up an airport at Jharsuguda in western Orissa.[7]
- Bhusan power and steel[8]
- Sunani & Magar Market Complex
Jharsuguda is a beautiful diaspora of different origins of people from across India which makes it unique & different from other cities in Orissa. Jharsuguda also has a considerable Anglo-Indian community living since before 1947. Due to its versatility, Hindi happens to be the prominently spoken language rather than local vernaculars.(Sambalpuri Language)
Transport
Since pre-independence days, the town has had a relatively developed transportation network. The main mode of transport is cycle rickshaw. However, from last few years auto rickshaws have also started for local transport. The main road starts from Sarbahal and goes till Beheramal.
Rail
The railway station comes under South Eastern Railway. Being an important junction on the erstwhile Bengal Nagpur Railways and the current Howrah-Mumbai route, Jharsuguda is directly connected to all the metros &states of India, especially Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand.
