South Shore Plaza is an enclosed shopping mall located in Braintree, Massachusetts, United States. Formerly New England's largest shopping mall (surpassed by the Natick Collection), it is anchored by Lord & Taylor, Macy's, Sears and Nordstrom (scheduled to open March 2010),[2] with the addition of Target in negotiation.[3] The mall currently has nearly 1,166,000 sq ft (108,325 m2) of retail and dining space, including a large food court.
History
South Shore Plaza originally opened in 1961 as an open-air plaza with a 120,000 sq ft (11,000 m2) Filene's and 30 smaller stores. A 300,316 sq ft (27,900 m2) Jordan Marsh (later converted to Macy's) opened in 1968. The center was enclosed in 1976 and saw additional anchors, such as Lord & Taylor in 1979 and Sears in 1980, when the mall reached 100 stores.
An expansion in 1995–96 added a second level (including "Boardwalk Cafes", the food court) and nearly doubled the size of the mall, while expanding the original Filene's store to include a home store. The mall was given a bright and airy feel, largely because of abundant skylighting and wide, spacious corridors. 1996 also saw the Jordan Marsh store renamed Macy's, while in 1998 Simon Property Group acquired the mall owner, Corporate Property Investors, and assumed management.
In 2005, May Department Stores (the then parent of Lord & Taylor and Filene's) was acquired by Federated Department Stores (the owner of Macy's). This led to Federated briefly closing the Filene's store in March 2006, before using the space to relocate its Macy's store that May. The remainder of the Filene's stores were renamed Macy's later that year. Federated sold the Lord & Taylor chain later that year, while selling the vacant Jordan Marsh/Macy's space to Simon Property Group.
Filene's Basement, one of the malls original anchors, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday May 4, 2009. New York’s Crown Acquisitions, with the Chetrit Group as its partner has made a bid to buy 17 of Filene's 25 locations including their famous Downtown Crossing location which closed for reconstruction and is now stalled. The South Shore Plaza store in Braintree is not included in the 17 stores to be purchased and is expected to close.[4]
A redevelopment was underway in 2009 and if completed as scheduled in March 2010, the center is expected to hold 1,607,000 sq ft (149,300 m2) and include a newly constructed three-level, 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m2) Nordstrom. Simon Property Group announced on May 12, 2009 that they are in negotiations with the town of Braintree and Target to include a Target store on the lowest level of the 3 level mall addition.[5] It is scheduled to open in October of 2010.
