BaTalaote are an ethnic group found in the central district of Botswana. They are part of a large group of ethnic groups called Bakalanga. Over the years Batalaote lost their language and adopted Sengwato, which is spoken by the Bangwato.

Batalaote are a very large tribe even though they are divided and live in various parts of Botswana, their totem is a heart/pelo/moyo and they do not pierce their ears. They are a very peaceful tribe, which migrated from Zimbabwe, they are the Shona decendents who fled Zimbabwe because of the inter-tribal wars. Their first settlement in Botswana was in a small village North-East of Botswana called Senyawe, where they lived on a hill. To this day, when you go to Senyawe village, you will find Batalaote there. In search for greener pastures, inter-tribal marriage and because of inter-tribal wars they were divided. That is why you will find some Batalaote in Serowe, Mmadinare, Makaleng, Bobirwa.
