"Open Arms"
Song

"Open Arms" is a song produced by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey's sixth album, Daydream. It is a cover of a song written by Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain — two of the members of Journey — and originally performed by Journey. The epic ballad details the struggle of lovers who are trying to reconcile by starting anew with "open arms". Carey's career has crossed paths with Journey's: the band's drummer Steve Smith played drums on many of her earlier singles, and its bassist for a short period in the mid-1980s, Randy Jackson, has worked with her for a long time.

It was released as the third single from Daydream in most markets outside the United States in 1996 (see 1996 in music), and performed moderately. It fared best in the United Kingdom, peaking at number four, and in the Philippines, where it competed directly with Carey's "One Sweet Day" (the preceding single from Daydream) and both songs topped the charts of numerous radio stations. However, it did not reach the top ten in other markets.

The video of the song, directed by Larry Jordan, presents a live performance of the song by Carey at Madison Square Garden. The Spanish version of this song, "El Amor Que Sone", also has a music video, also a live performance in Madison Square Garden from the same night. Footage of the performance used for the English video was released in its full unedited form as part of the Fantasy: Mariah Carey at Madison Square Garden DVD/video, but never in edited music-video form on video or DVD. The Spanish video has never been released on video or DVD.
