Fire
The fire began on Friday, October 23, 2009.[1] The initial fire destroyed eleven tanks at the facility,[1] but quickly spread to other nearby tanks, which contained jet fuel, oil and bunker fuel.[1] The resulting explosion was measured as the equivilent to a 2.8-magnitude earthquake.[1] A total of 17 tanks are on fire as of October 25th.[1] The flames reached a height of 100ft (30m) above the refinery.[1]
No one was killed in the explosion, but two people were injured at the nearby United States Army base at Fort Buchanan.[1]
130 firefighters, with the support of the Puerto Rico National Guard, responded to the fire.[1] Governor Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency. 1,500 residents were evacuated from four adjacent communities.[1]
