It hosts a number of [[Amtrak]] passenger trains, such as the [[Capitol Corridor]], [[Coast Starlight]], and the [[California Zephyr]]. The line was originally built by the [[California Pacific Railroad]] (Cal-P). The Cal-P was purchased by the [[Southern Pacific Railroad]] (SP) which was eventually purchased by the [[Union Pacific Railroad]] (UP), the line's current owner. UP operates numerous freight trains over the route, of what is now called the Martinez Subdivision. Freights over the route are mainly intermodal, with the MRVSJ (Roseville - San Jose Manifest) occasionally making an appearance depending on the length of the train. Whenever the northern most part of the SP Coast Division (Now UP Coast Subdivision) is shut down, Union Pacific will run detours over the line bringing an increased number of freight trains over the line.
