Hi,

Can someone with the appropriate authorizations please receive from me by mail a serie of photographs I've created and upload them globally & freely, so one can use them within some relevant articles on several language-wikis?

It should be noted that I'm an active editor on some 4 language editions.

There is no such thing as your page. All pages belong to the Wikipedia community, unless you mean your userpage, in which case you can put {{db-u1}} at the top. Intelligentsium 03:24, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Articles can be nominated for deletion, at which point community discussion will work out where we sit. I've noticed that discussion generally takes the subject's wishes into account, but in this case you are very well respected as a weather forecaster, and it may be that the consensus would be to keep the article. You may find some good advice at the help page for biographies of living people, and I would add that if your concern relates to some of the personal information - such as date of birth - that was included in the article, it may be possible to raise that on the talk page, as we do have policies regarding protecting people's privacy. - Bilby (talk) 03:38, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, it isn't an advertisement, or if anything, it's an internal advertisement. I'd rather see something like that on top of every page than whatever ad Google Adwords deems appropriate for a particular page. There is honestly nothing incredibly annoying about it, and if you really despise a box asking you to donate for the sake of knowledge, than simply disable it or have it shrink. Think of it as a small sacrifice so that you can view and contribute to an immense amount of shared knowledge amongst many people in the world. Don't think too much of it.

Bold Title Automatically

Is there a tool that, when you go to a page where the title isn't bolded, bolds it for you? If not, I just created one. Would anyone try it out? Just put the following script into your monobook.js file. This will add a tab that says bold when you are viewing an article, and when you click on it, it will automatically bold the title.

I was deeply concerned to discover that another user accused me of harassment, and deleted a post I made about four hours ago to the talk page for the medical cannabis article on that basis. I'd really appreciate an opinion or two as to whether or how I might have been out of line, or whether I can reasonably revert to preserve the comment/query I made there. I addressed the objection and deletion here, btw, on my talk page, and asked the deleting user to restore my post. ( I'd be perfectly happy to edit out the time-of-day observations I made, before reposting, if folks here think that advisable, and if reposting seems appropriate. ) Thanks! Buzzsherman, I suggest you look into this more closely. Medical cannabis has been plagued by trolls, sock puppets, and POV pushers for some time now. Ohiostandard ignored several open threads regarding concerns about the content and launched into a bad faith attack on User:Alfie66, questioning his good work, and asking him to reveal personal information. I have informed Ohiostandard that this is not the place to file a COI notice, and that he should take it to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard. Furthermore, Ohiostandard is trying to wikilawyer over outing other editors, and his assessment about the other users edits is in error, as the user has made a significant effort to improve the article, including discussing his edits, usually before making them. I do not want my article merged

Hello,

I am trying to create an article on ANTIQUE Persian carpets. My article has been deleted and threatened to be deleted because of wanting a merger with Persian carpets. How do I keep the content of my article? Couple of points: It's not your article, you may have created it but once it's in the mainspace it is freely editable by other editors; if you want to argue against merger, please contribute to the merger discussion. Check the alternative outlets, and see WikiIndex where you might find another wiki with content rules more to your liking. Probably - WMF was several million US dollars in the black on their last financial report. But you have to use common sense: if they had enough money, they wouldn't be asking for donations (and they definitely wouldn't be plastering "Wikipedia FOREVER" all over the place). Wikipedia has by far the lowest operating costs of any other Web site of similar popularity (such as Google and Yahoo!), but running Wikipedia still costs money. Wikipedia is like a helicopter hovering in flight. It can stay aloft as long as it has more fuel to burn. Even if there is plenty of fuel in the tank now, getting more fuel buys more time. Also, having lots of small donors probably makes it easier for WMF to attract some large donors. The many small donors give credibility to the project. In any case, charitable giving is not something a person needs to be talked into. To some people, giving to causes they believe in is the obvious thing to do. To those people we owe all progress. Scaling svg files

Hi, I was interested in looking at the graphic on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia-servers-2009-04-05.svg, but a lot of the text is too small to be legible. Because this is an svg image I assume that it should be possible to expand it to any size, and hence read the text, but I can't figure out how to do this. I don't want to download the file, and don't see why I should have to -- and in any case I don't, as far as I know, have any software that could display it. I'm using IE 8. You can go to the file's page on Wikimedia Commons (:Commons:File:Wikimedia-servers-2009-04-05.svg), where there is an option to render the svg as a png in various sizes, the largest of which is 2000px wide (3 times wider than the average computer desktop). Hopefully, IE will allow you to zoom in on the png and make it readable - though be warned: I wouldn't put anything past Microsoft when it comes to IE displaying stuff correctly. Since the image is currently not fully usable at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia-servers-2009-04-05.svg, I was going to transfer the list of higher-resolution links to that page from http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia-servers-2009-04-05.svg but I don't see how it's been done. I think that's a software feature (as opposed to something inserted using wikicode) and is thus only available on the wiki that the image is uploaded to. So that wouldn't be possible, sorry. Xenon54 / talk / 22:58, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

The problem (as often) is IE8 - the svg is actually (1,200 × 1,290 pixels), but the page shows a reduced view - if I click the image (in FF3.5) I get the full size picture - all IE8 does is offer to download the image. BTW Inkscape (freeware) will display svg files if you do download them  Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 23:11, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

I don't see how the problem is IE's. As you say, the svg is nominally 1,200 × 1,290 pixels. I assume these values are coded into the svg. The graphic displayed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia-servers-2009-04-05.svg is actually a png, which I assume has been created from the svg by Wikipedia software. This png is apparently 558 x 600 pixels. So, Wikipedia seems to have ignored the specified size in the svg file (presumably set large precisely so that it is legible) and inappropriately chosen a smaller size. That is merely the preview image, which is smaller than the full size (this is true also of raster images, which are displayed smaller than their native resolutions). To see the full size image you click the link below, which will load the actual file. In most browsers this works fine, but Internet Explorer, to my knowledge, still lacks SVG support, which is why it tries to download the file to disk rather than display it in browser. As mentioned above if you go to the same file description page on Commons you get additional options to view "SVG rendered as PNG images in different resolutions" – 200px, 500px, 1000px and 2000px. A short, but not bad, article

I have edited an article which is about as short as a stub, but it is only short because there isn't any more encyclopedic information that can be added to the article. It doesn't need cleanup, and it doesn't have any unsourced fancruft or anything of the like. Researching obscure bios

As a follow-up question, how would someone go about finding that sort of information? He doesn't have any kind of official bio written about him. I would like to know for some other bios, especially ones like Matt Thiessen, where early life/birthday is mentioned, but there is no source I could find that supplies that info. This is a common problem. If you don't want to peruse local libraries, than Google scholar and google books are usually good methods. Worldcat can also be very useful. I have written two previous questions about copyrights. May I now ask general questions.

I am writing a psychology book and I want to make many references to psychologists such as Sigmund Freud, Carl Rogers, Aaron Beck, etc. by placing their pictures in my book.

1. Are pictures of faces copyrighted? 2. I have written to their websites to ask permission but they have not replied. Am I now free to place their pictures while acknowledging the URL where their pictures are found?

1. Yes images of faces are copyrighted.
2. No, lack of response does not nullify the copyright. You NEED permission of the original photographer/owner of the image.

Someone kindly created a page on me unfortunately it does not state some matters that are more significant and above all its out of date. I left it alone for a couple of years but my daughter has persuaded me that its important to get it right. Copying and Pasting a Wikipedia Article

Whenever I copy and paste a Wikipedia Article to a Word document, the "blue" words do not get transferred: Instead, what gets transferred is the web address of the Wikipedia article about the topic represented by the blue words. I'd like to be able to paste the original words, not the linkage. What do I need to do to allow this? (I'm on a Mac, if that matters.) I don't have a Mac, but here are some things to try:

• The PC version of Microsoft Word has a paste as text option which strips out all the markup. Maybe the Mac version has a similar option.
• Another option on the PC is to paste into any text editor program. On the PC an example would be Notepad (Windows). On the Mac you might try TextEdit. You might have to figure out how to tell TextEdit that you want a plain text file. Once you get a plain text file, you can copy from there and paste into Word.
• Lynx (web browser) displays pages in plain text format. It is extremely plain but that is what you want here.

It will depend on your version of Word. Early versions did not support html, later ones do. If I select part of a page and copy into my Word - I get all the blue link words (and when I hover the mouse over a blue link) up pops a box that shows the link, with "ctrl+click to follow link". Alternatively if you select Edit... Paste Special from the menu, then you can just select "Unformatted Text" to paste the page with no links and or web addresses. All you need to do is go to the article you'd like to copy, click on the link for "Printable version", which is the bottommost link on the toolbox on the lefthand side of the page. The resulting page will be able to be copied and pasted with no links. By the way, if you want to get rid of links in Word for Mac documents that have been transferred from the web, highlight the linked text and click Apple+K → remove link. Size of Photo

I successfully uploaded a photo into an article I am editing...but the photo is larger than I would like on the final saved page. I used photoshop and reduced the size of the image, and uploaded a second version, but the size remained the same on the new saved page.

How do I reduce the size of the image?

I assume you mean "Elijah C. Wadhams". Your first photo was 900 × 1,162 pixels, and the second was 600 × 775 pixels. Note: You did not need to create a new photo page - you could have uploaded the smaller one onto the same page - it would have replaced the original. You may want to consider deleting one of them. The size of the picture shown is not fixed by the uploaded file, it's fixed by the "Image" line in the Article, which you have set at 325px - make that smaller and the picture will be smaller (or remove the size completely and it will revert to a default thumb).  Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 18:27, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Can you explain what you mean by "gallery"? Plymouth, Pennsylvania has no gallery in the sense of the word I just linked, which is the sense I think many regulars would interpet it. If you mean how do I delete an image I uploaded locally, just go the image and place {{db-g7}}. Indeed. The images all appear to fail Wikipedia's fair use policy for re-using copyrighted work; therefore tagging them for deletion seems appropriate. For future reference, if you look at the 1968 article, you will find that with each "events" month, there should be a calendar for that month. In 1968's case, there wasn't one for January, for some reason - although I have now added it. How do you create an FAQ?

Some articles, like Global warming, have an FAQ embedded in the discussion page so editors who watch the article don't have to answer the same question multiple times. It's been suggested that an FAQ be created for Scientific opinion on climate change. Unfortunately, I'm not finding any policy guidelines or instructions for creating an FAQ for a specific article. Hi Rochelle. I'm sorry you're struggling with Wikipedia's instructions and tutorials. It's true that it can be a steep learning curve here at first, but there's a lot of help around if you need it. Creating a new article is one of the more complicated processes here, and some users don't do so for quite a while, preferring to make minor improvements and additions to existing articles while they find their way around and become familiar with how Wikipedia works. There's a lot of guidance aimed at those creating new articles, which is why you may be feeling a bit swamped with advice.

Creating your article as a user subpage is a good idea, so you can work on it in your userspace with little risk of it being deleted. IIf you click on User:RochelleCurtis/The Palace Guard, type in the box, then save your work, you'll create the page you need. Talk pages of pages that became redirects

What is one supposed to do with talk pages of pages which were later redirected to another page? Any guideline or advice on it? E.g., sometimes other names for things result in two parallel articles. One is later merged or redirected and they end up with parallel talk headers. Should they just be ignored, or redirected to the talk page of the new article, or redirected and merged if there are any posts worth salvaging? If not redirected, what about the {{WPBiography}} templates? Should I change class to stub (which is what I've been doing)? What about changing living to no, otherwise it appears on lists like Wikipedia:Uncategorized biographies of living people/BLPPotential. The instructions on those lists say to add "|non-bio=yes" but that does not actually seem to be a real parameter and does nothing. • Anakin ^(talk) 12:48, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Your third example looks like the best solution. Redirect the talk page of the redirect to the talk page of the target article. When all we have for a person is a redirect of their name to some other article, I would argue that no 'biography' exists and there is no need to use a WPBiography template on anything related to them. .svg map not rendering properly

I have converted the .svg image File:KøbenhavnMetroKort.svg to File:KøbenhavnMetroKort English.svg. I first uploaded the image, but it had a rendering error due to being saved as an Inkscape .svg instead of a generic .svg. I then (half a year later) uploaded a clean version of it. When I look at the file page, it looks fine, but when being rendered at List of Copenhagen Metro stations, it looks wrong. I have tried purging the image (on WP and Commons) and the article, and also tried to alter the image size, but it never seems to be able to render right. It looks like the text is not scaling as well as the image (change the pic in the arcticle to 650px and it looks OK). Suggestions - is reduce the original map down to the size you plan for the article (500px?) (Inkscape - Object... Transform... I don't believe that solution will work – the problems are due to the Verdana font face not being supported by the SVG rendering engine used on Wikimedia servers. You should change the font to one of the supported ones listed at m:SVG fonts, or convert the text to paths. AJCham 19:53, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

• Fredy,00, from what I can see, it cannot be uploaded to Commons under the PD-Russia-2008, as I don't think it meets the criteria. Its use on Wikipedia is OK under fair use, but fair use images cannot be put on Commons. As you say, you are blocked on Commons - but I can't see that the image can be hosted there anyway.

I started a page for a book and found a picture of its cover at ar.wikisource,org - how would I use that image on a a page here at the English Wikipedia? If it is "fair use" it can only be put on Wikipedia. However, as the above link no longer works, the point is moot. As I can't log in, I can't see the deletion log to find the reason.

My bad - I just tried it and it worked for me too - I clicked on the wrong button before! With regard to the image, the Arabic Wikisource page lists it as PD - but it might be worthwhile checking that it would be PD under Commons/Wikipedia - It might also be worth asking at the equivalent to the Help Desk at ar.wikisource - the main Help Page appears to be at this location, but I can't read Arabic, so I can't help further. Unable to retrieve password

I recall setting up account jogrady a long time ago, but I have not been able to get into it for a long time. As a result I've had to set up this account. (jwogrady) I would much prefer to go back to account jogrady if at all possible.

When I try to password reset account jogrady (without the w) it says there is no email address associated with the account. Is there another way to reset the password? If no, please verify the account is still active and unlocked so I can continue going through my historical password list.

• I'm afraid that if you did not set an e-mail up with the account, there's no way to retrieve you password. The account is showing on the creation log, created 01:36, 24 October 2006. However, there is no user page, no talk page and no contributions. If you made any contributions, they would appear to have all been deleted. The account has no deleted edits either. Accounts don't expire or get prevented from logging in so if you remember the password then it will still work. Accounts can get blocked from editing but it doesn't prevent logging in, and the account jogrady has never been blocked from anything. As PhantomSteve says, you can abandon it or try to usurp it. Either is fine by us. Creating a new account when the old has no edits is perfectly OK. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:29, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Non-Free Images and Userspace

Is is OK to use a non free image (a book cover) to work on an article I'm currently working on in my sandbox? Eventually, it will be placed in the mainspace, but for now the only place the image will be used will be in my userspace. --Michaelkourlas (talk) 21:22, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

I suggest you wait until you move the article to regular space before uploading the image. You can put it in your sandbox but it can't stay there for too long (more than a month). ZooFari 21:29, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

You can put the link in your sandbox article with a leading colon so that a link to the image appears but the image itself doesn't—e.g., [[:File:Example.jpg|thumb|250px|Caption]]. Then you just have to remove the first colon when you move or copy the article to mainspace. I seem to recall a part of the dispute resolution guidelines that mentioned something about when person C saw an edit war brewing between persons A and B, that they could list the page on some list and the article would be locked until a consensus could be reached. Remove Record From Special:Contributions

Is it possible to remove the record in you user's Special:Contributions pages which says that you've made a particular edit on an article in Wikipedia from once you've made that edit? If so then, how? If not, then will it stay there forever?

• Your contributions are generally there for ever! If there is a particular reason why you would not want a specific edit showing, for privacy reasons, there is a process called Oversight - read that article, which explains the process, as well as giving a link to the list of Oversighters. There has to be a very good reason for the removal of a particular edit from your contributions - for example "I made a silly comment" or "I was rude to someone" would not be sufficient - whereas something like "I put my telephone number on that talk page" would be, as this would be a privacy issue. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 10:46, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Citing old books, only have Library of Congress number

• Just use the fields in the cite template that you can fill in - author, title, date of publication, publisher. Not all fields have to be used. What would you have us do? We are completely independent from ms.wiki. I think you'll get much more useful reaction if you:

(a) Re-read the block notice at ms.wiki, and follow the directions for requesting an unblock or creating an account. If it is similar to here, you may need to create it somewhere else, not at school

(b) If for some reason that doesn't work, read the ms.wiki help documentation and find the equivalent of the {{helpme}} template, and use that on the IP's talk page.

Disputed fair use

I have seen an article that uses an unfree image, with the requested non-free content rationale provided. However, I have reasons to believe that such rationale is incorrect (but only for that case; it is also used at other articles with the related rationales, and I don't dispute those others). Hi all. Please take a look at this picture's page. Its uploader seems to have problems with copyrights as he often uploads foreign images and claims that he is the author. This picture seems to have the same story. I don't know what template should I insert in this picture's page (think a sort of {{di-no permission}}). If you are certain that the the uploader is not the author, then it is likely a copyright violation, and you should request speedy deletion of the image with {{db-f9}}. The best way to be sure that the image is a copyright violation is by knowing the URL of the website that the image was taken from, so add the URL to the request by using {{db-f9|url=URL}} when you add it to the page. --Mysdaao ^talk 20:35, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

The "since" and "since mine" tabs are features of Twinkle. When viewing a diff, "since" will show you the difference between the revision currently being looked at in history and the most recent version of the page, and "since mine" will show you the difference between the revision made from your last edit to the page and the current version. How to remove a re-direct

Any article with the name "Goldscheider" automatically re-directs to Goldscheider ceramics. This is in principle wrong and unfair, as there are, and can be, other Goldscheider articles which should not be automatically re-directed just to Goldscheder ceramics. How to sugest new photo names?

I wanted to sugest a file name change for a photo that had a strange numerical name, and it said that I should use the { {rename media|New name.jpg|Reason} } format. Where would I enter this line? Would I click "edit" on the "Summary" section right below and enter it there, or is there somewhere else I'm supposed to do this? I'm new to editing, and I want to help contribute information, and also help to clean things up.
