Murry Bergtraum High School For Business Careers in New York is located in Lower Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge, it is a New York City Public High School located next to City Hall on 411 Pearl Street. It is comprised of over 3000 students and is ranked as a "School Of Excellence" by U.S. News and World Report. Well known for its Women's Basketball program, it also has a program that focuses on Business and one labeled "Collegiate" which takes in students from the surrounding neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. It is known for not having windows in its classrooms, due to it's triangular shape, only the outer portion of the builiding has windows, the interior side of the building, however does not have windows. School Mission Statement
Murry Bergtraum High School is dedicated to preparing young adults for the intellectual and academic rigors necessary for college as well as the social demands of the business world. The school's mission, therefore, is to instill in its students a strong sense of ethics, problem-solving skills, strategies for consensus-building, team spirit, a work ethic, a sense of self-esteem, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. This vision continues to be realized through a collaborative effort of various constituencies: SLT, PA, Alumni Association, and the Business Advisory Council. The support system provided for students, our dedication to high academic standards and our extensive connections with the business community make Bergtraum the first choice for students who have decided upon business careers.
Principal's Statement
Bergtraum's popularity continues to rise due to the excellent reputation that it has maintained over the years. Bergtraum recieves over 10,000 applications yearly, with an incoming class of approximately 800. We service a diverse population of students, coming from all five boroughs. Through the efforts of our business collaboratives, we are able to offer mentoring programs and internships. We foster an enviornment which is conductive to academic and social success. A series of "Business Institutes" provides students with a focus on their major areas of study. Our success comes from the efforts of our outstanding staff, parents, students, and corporate partners.
History
Murry Bergtraum High School For Business Careers was the first academic comprehensive high school with business majors. It was supported by the Downtown Lower Manhattan Association to prepare young people to enter the world of work and college. The school is 30 years old. As of the year 2006, it celebrates it's anniversary.

The Bergtraum Goal
Bergtraum's vision is to prepare its students to thrive and to flourish both academically, and socially in its educational option enviornment while students acquire technical skills that they will need to meet the demand and challenges of the business world. The school has eight business majors, also allowing students to take CTE examinations. Such as MOS Microsoft Office Specialist examination. Unlike the other business themed high schools (Such as Norman Thomas High School, and the High School For Economics and Finance), in order to graduate with the Bergtraum seal, each student must have a minimum of 10 business credits.
Business Programs
Bergtraum is divided into 8 houses, each house representing a specific major. Students in each house, or department study in their major for their 4 years in high school.

Finance
In the Finance major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, accounting, business introduction, business analysis, law and computer applications, college level accounting, taxation, and financial investments.
Administrative Assistant Technology
In the Administrative Assistant Technology Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, MOS Certification, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and access programs, notetaking (Shorthand), business english, internet, business analysis, and business protocols.
Information Systems
In the Information Systems Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, MOS Certificaion, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and access programs, integrated computer applications, and desktop publishing.
Travel and Tourism
In the Travel and Tourism Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, geography, computer systems, job shadowing, paid summer internships, and participate in the virtual enterprise program.
Computer Science
In the Computer Science Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, QBasic, C++, HTML, Javascript, web page design, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, desktop publishing, computer graphics, and participate in mentoring programs with Lehman Brothers.
Legal Studies
In the Legal Studies Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, business law, trial procedures, general law, basic law of contracts, real estate law, urban planning, constitutional law, and participate in courthouse visits.
Marketing, Introduction To Business
In the Marketing Major, students are introduced to keyboarding skills, the principles of marketing and advertsing, retailing, insurance, business law, business computer operations, sports marketing, and participate in the Estee Lauder retail academy.
Hard of Hearing (Specific Students)
Students in this house must follow procedures according to their respective major.
Courses & Programs
Bergtraum offers many courses to its students which include: The Virtual Enterprise Initiative, College Now Program, College Extention Program, Academy of Travel and Tourism, as well as many high school afterschool programs. Advanced Placement Courses include Calculus AB, English Language and Literature, Enviornmental Science, Accounting, Computer Science Spanish Language and Literature, Statistics, United States History, World History, and Spanish.
- All of these courses are college level courses (AP) and will count towards their college career.
Partnerships
Bergtraum has many sponsers, especially in the corporate field, which include: Estee Lauder, Royal & Sun Alliance, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, American Express, JP Morgan Chase, Time Warner Cable, Futures & Options, and the Financial Women's association. Higher Education Sponsers include: St. John's University, Baruch College, Hunter College, BMCC, and the New York University.
Other sponsers include: The YWCA, Downtown Beekman, and the Hispanic Federation of New York.
Extracurricular Activites
Bergtraum has many activities for our students to participate in, including: The Student Government/Union, Senior Council, Council For Unity, Internships on and off site, and many more, including the academic field, such as: Math Team, Lincoln Douglas Debate Team, and the National Honor Society. Clubs include: The Black Student Union, Salsa Club, Chinese Christian Society, Christian Society, Ambassadors Club, Chinese Talent Society, West Indian Club, The Political Action Committee and the Asian Club.
PSAL Sports Teams
The school participates in the Public Schools Athletic League, Bergtraum has a reputaion with the Bergtraum Lady Blazers, one of the best Basketball teams in the city. However Bergtraum also has other sports teams.
For the boys: Baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, handball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, and volleyball are offered.
For the girls: Basketball, bowling, cross country, handball, indoor and outdoor track, softball, tennis, volleyball, and Junior Varsity volleyball are offered.
Awards, & Recognition
Besides being ranked "A School Of Excellence" by the U.S. and world report, it has also won countless awards in the sports area, The Kurt Thomas Investment Challenge, Think Quest Awards, and the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
