Copyright problem: Economy of Pittsburgh
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Economy of Pittsburgh, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to include text copied from http://www.upmc.com/aboutupmc/fast-facts/Pages/default.aspx http://www.gianteagle.com/faq/Faqitem.aspx?categoryId=6 http://www.hoovers.com/company/West_Penn_Allegheny_Health_System/rrtrhsi-1.html http://www.quantcast.com/pitt.edu http://www.hoovers.com/company/The_PNC_Financial_Services_Group_Inc/rrryxi-1.html http://www.pittsburghfuture.com/economy.html http://www.city-data.com/us-cities/The-Northeast/Pittsburgh-Economy.html, some of which was placed by you. I'm afraid this is a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are liable to be blocked from editing.
If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Economy of Pittsburgh saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved.
I note that when you first placed it, you did put some of this information into quotation marks (although not all), as with this. Your removal of them here leads me to some concern that you may not realize how much you must rewrite material to avoid copyright infringement. There is an essay on Wikipedia, Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing, that may help. This guide from Purdue University can also be helpful.
Simply putting quotation marks around the text is not a good solution, however. The amount of material you can take from a copyrighted work is limited by fair use requirements in the United States. Among other factors, these consider the size and importance of the text in comparison to both your source and the new work. In order to remain well within fair use, Wikipedia forbids extensive quotations and limits the ways in which they should be used. Policy and guideline on this is viewable at WP:NFC.
Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:29, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. As I mentioned above, Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and this guide from Purdue University may be helpful to you in determining how to rewrite. I would not recommend that you overwrite the text directly as you did here. It can be difficult to rewrite completely in your own words if you're trying to revise it in the same space. For instance, your text "158 corporate and 65 independently owned and operated supermarkets in addition to more than 130 fuel and convenience stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia and Maryland" is with the exception of a few differences in number duplicated verbatim from [1]. Your revisions to the section on West Penn Allegheny Health System includes the sentences "The health care system, which operates with nearly 2,000 beds, admits over 78,000 patients and handles over 200,000 emergency visits each year. The system also helps to deliver annually more than 4,000 newborns.", are both copied from [2], with the addition of the phrase "which operates with nearly 2,000 beds". In the section of University of Pittsburgh, "Its flagship campus operates in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh where about 27,000 graduate and undergraduate students attend." is only minimally altered from source's "operates its flagship campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh where about 27,000 graduate and undergraduate students attend", and "The university is also connected to the UPMC Health System, which operates about 20 hospitals and an insurance company manages physicians' offices, and offers long-term and in-home care and also has its headquarters in Oakland" follows very closely on "Pitt is also affiliated with the UPMC Health System, which operates about 20 hospitals and an insurance company, manages physicians' offices, and offers long-term and in-home care." The PNC Financial Services section still includes "It provides fund administration services through PNC Global Investment Servicing. PNC also owns boutique investment bank Harris Williams and about a third of money management giant BlackRock", both of which sentences come directly from [3]. I'm afraid what you've done is create a derivative work, something only the copyright holder has the legal right to authorize. We are not able to use this altered text.
