With the growing number of evangelical churches in Southeastern Michigan, the need was evident for a theologically conservative graduate institution to prepare pastors, missionaries, teachers, counselors and other Christian workers for the ministry.

Michigan Theological Seminary began classes at its original campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1994. The library collection at that time included approximately 10,000 volumes. Within two years the school had outgrown that facility, and in January of 1996, relocated to the town of Plymouth, on the western outskirts of Greater Detroit. Commencement exercises for the first graduating class were held in December 1996.

The seminary was accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools in 2003 and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada in 2007.

By 2008, the Seminary employed eight resident and thirteen adjunct faculty. The library, under the direction of the Director of Library Services, had grown to over 75,000 volumes.

The seminary offers the following degrees: Master of Divinity; Master of Theological Studies; Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology; and Master of Arts in Christian Education. The seminary also offers a one-year Graduate Certificate in Bible program designed for lay-leaders.
