The Michigan Theological Society founded the Michigan Theological Seminary (MTS) in 1994. Composed of evangelical educators, ministers, and businessmen, Michigan Theological Society was incorporated in 1988 with the primary purpose of establishing an independent evangelical seminary in Michigan. Composed of evangelical educators, ministers, and businessmen, Michigan Theological Society was incorporated in 1988 with the primary purpose of establishing an independent evangelical seminary in Michigan. With the growing number of evangelical churches in Southeastern Michigan, the need was evident for a theologically conservative graduate institution to prepare pastors, missionaries, teachers, counselors and other Christian workers for the ministry.

The seminary was accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools in 2003 and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada in 2007.

In November 2009, Moody Bible Institute and Michigan Theological Seminary jointly announced that plans for Michigan Theological Seminary to merge with Moody Bible Institute's Moody Theological Seminary and Graduate School had been approved by the relevant accrediting body and that a formal merger agreement is expected to be in place by January 1, 2010.[1]
