Mangalarga is a Brazilian horse breed, that was in the beggining was raised by Francisco Gabriel Junqueira (Baron of Alfenas) breeding Royal Alter stallions, from Portugal with colonial mares in Brazil. It happened at Baependi County at Minas Gerais State. This mix also originated the Mangalarga Marchador breed that differs from de Mangalarga because of its smooth gait and its strait relation with iberian horses instead of other European breeds. It is very important to say, that at this time, there was just one type of horse, nominated by "Mangalarga Horse". In 1802, when the Junqueira family moved to São Paulo state, the topography, the forest, the local culture and the different species of deer, which they used to hunt, forced them to seek for a horse with different characteristics, by the selection or crossing, and so they started to bred the Mangalarga horse with Thoroughbred, two stalions, Arabian horse, two half blood stallions, American Saddle Horse, one stalion and two mares and one [Luzitano] stalion. Nowadays, this blood remains only by a few female lines. This made the Mangalarga horse a different breed from the Mangalarga Marchador breed. They are so different that each one has its own studbook.Mangalarga Marchador = Triple contact base or support while marching;Mangalarga = doble(bipedal) contact base or support while marching.
The Mangalarga horse are registered at ABCCRM since 1934.
