"Break Your Heart" is a single by Taio Cruz, the first single from his album Rokstarr.[1] It was released on September 14, 2009.[2]. It was released to iTunes on Sunday 13 September and was on BBC Radio 1's A-List.[3] The song debuted at #1 on the UK Singles Chart on Sunday September 20, 2009.[4] The song remained #1 for three weeks before dropping three places to #4.[5]. "Break Your Heart" dropped out of the Top 40 on December 20, 2009, exactly 3 months after it first reached number 1, and after thirteen consecutive weeks in the top 40. An official remix was made and features American Rapper Ludacris. It will be Cruz's first American Single.
Background and release
"Break Your Heart" was originally penned for Cheryl Cole. The R&B star said that he wrote two songs for Cole's debut solo album, but her record label did not contact him about the tracks. "I wrote a couple of songs for Cheryl Cole, and 'Break Your Heart' was one of them, 'Stand Up' was another one, which is on her album, but we sent both of the songs to her record label and we didn't really hear back from them," Cruz told MTV News. "We just thought if they're not going to get back to us, we'll just carry on moving so I took it back, and changed the verses and made it work for a guy and then put it out." Cruz also added that the label got back to him after they had listened to a track but the song had already been sent to radio and would have been difficult to get back.[6]
The song was written and produced by Cruz and Fraser T. Smith and was released on September 14, 2009.[7] It debuted at #1 in the UK becoming the singer's first UK number one single.[4] The song achieved similar success on the Irish Singles Chart peaking at #2, becoming Cruz's first Top 10 single in that region.[4]
Speaking of the song's lyrical background, Cruz told noted R&B writer Pete Lewis of the award-winning Blues & Soul: "Its about breaking a girl's heart, but in a way that's kinda not on purpose. It's more that I'm just a single guy, trying to BE single and trying to REMAIN single. And sometimes, when you are in that place, you get girls who wanna be a part of what you're about - but, because you're not really ready for a relationship, those girls can end up being heartbroken. So what I'm basically saying is 'I might just break your heart. But I'm only gonna break your heart if you come through this way right now'."[8]
The lead girl in the video is a London based model called Nadya Nepomnyashaya. [9]
Critical reception
BBC chart blog gave the song a positive review and rewarded it with 4/5 stars:
- "Oh my days, Taio Cruz has done it. He's actually gone and done it. With new single "Break Your Heart", he has done the unthinkable. The unimaginable. The unbelievable. He has officially created the Most Arrogant Song of 2009, despite the HUGE competition".[10]
Digital spy also gave the song a positive review with 4/5 stars:
- Striking while the Europop iron is still red hot, 'Break Your Heart' is an urban club banger that lands somewhere between a softer Tinchy and a more melodic Akon. "I'm only going to break, break your heart," Cruz warns a potential suitor over a backdrop of stomping beats and shimmering synths. This might not be hugely original, but thanks to a fiercely hypnotic chorus that grabs you instantly, it's clear why Cruz has become one of the hottest collaborators of the moment.[11]
