No Angel, Dido's debut album, combines her soft, angelic voice with electronics and excellent production for a very nice sound. Bittersweet, atmospheric pop music with a flavour all its own. Originally released in 1999, it found a mass audience in 2001.
Worldwide success
The success of No Angel was spurred on by her appearance with Eminem on the track of his The Marshall Mathers LP released in 2000. The Marshall Mathers LP reached number one on the US and Canadian charts. Dido appeared in the video for "Stan" with featured the music for her song "Thank You" and Stan was nominated for a Grammy for the track. While the song only reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, it went to number one in the UK and Australia and was a worldwide hit. However, Dido did not sing with Eminem in the Grammy Awards held in 2002 with Elton John taking her place. Additionally, the song "Here with Me" from the album appeared as the title music to the hit TV series Roswell at the time of the albums release.
"Thank You", the album's second single, rode on the back of the publicity caused by Stan, reaching number 3 on both the US and UK singles charts and number one in Brazil in 2001. The prior single, "Here with Me", had gone top ten in Portugal and Greece while going top 40 in France, America, and New Zealand. "Here With Me"'s moderate American success garnered its video (which had two different versions) heavy airplay on MTV2 in 2000. However, it was not until the video for "Thank You" that Dido achieved massive success on American MTV and VH1, as well as on MTV2.
The third single "Hunter" went top twenty on the World Adult Charts and the UK singles charts while achieving top ten success in Portugal and Greece. "My Lover's Gone" reached the top of the charts in Brazil (as it was in the soundtrack of a very famous brazilian soap opera) while "Don't Think of Me" made the US Adult top 40.
No Angel was one of the best selling albums of the year throughout the world being the best selling album of that year in the UK and the second best in Australia. The album also went top 3 in the US album charts and reached number 5 in Canada. The album continues to sell well five years after its release.
The album won the prize for best album at the 2002 Brit awards where she also took the best female solo artist prize.
