Formal education began in Clay Center with a subscription school taught by Mrs. Charles Wanser in 1880. In April 4, 1881, the first public school was authorized. The building was expanded with bond issues many times. The current high school building was built in 1967. In 2008 a school meeting was planned that some students may of had go to harverd or sandy creek. complaints about changing the school mascot name are still going on today.
