Untitled

Animal is the debut album of American pop singer-songwriter Ke$ha, released January 5, 2010 on RCA Records in the United States.[7] The first single, "TiK ToK" was released to US radio on October 5, 2009.[8] It is set to be released in the United Kingdom in April 2010.

Background

Ke$ha was featured on Flo Rida's single, "Right Round". Then it was announced that she had signed with RCA Records[9] through Dr. Luke and was working on her debut album,[10] Animal, which was released on January 5, 2010 in the US. She told DigitalSpy that when it came to her music she wanted to "give people something that brings them joy. There are artists who do more serious acoustic stuff, and I really admire them, but what I want to bring to the table is just fucking fun."[11]

Release and promotion

She performed five songs for a Live Session with MTV UK, "TiK ToK", "Dinosaur", "Blah Blah Blah", "Backstabber" and "Party At A Rich Dude's House".[12] The first three songs were used for the MTV Push program that is broadcast on MTV channels worldwide.[13][14] "TiK ToK" was used to promote season six of Project Runway and was featured in the 2009 reboot of Melrose Place[15] and The Hills.[16] Other two songs, "Boots & Boys" and "Blah Blah Blah", were used in two episodes of the new Melrose Place as well.[15]

Singles

"TiK ToK" was the first single from the album. The song was serviced to US radio on October 5, 2009.[8] The song reached number one on New Zealand, Canada and Australia's national singles charts, and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[17][18] In the UK, the song peaked at number four.[19] According to SoundScan, it was downloaded 610,000 times as a digital single, serving as the highest number of digital singles sold by a female artist in one week, and the second highest overall.[20]

Reception

The Boston Globe's James Reed wrote a scathing review of the album, stating that it was difficult to discern that Ke$ha had co-written every song on the album because she sounded "vapid and faceless, as if she doesn’t even believe what she’s singing." He went on to call the album "flat and vacuous" and denounced Animal as "a shallow hodgepodge of 2009’s tried-and-true formulas," and said "you can almost hear the clock counting down her fifteen minutes of fame" [2] Entertainment Weekly writer Mikael Wood gave it a B+ rating and stated that although the artist herself was the most brazen in the dance-pop field, she did right in employing Dr.Luke to frame her work.[3]
