Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University, popularly known as SRM University is a co-educational private university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The university has four campuses in Tamil Nadu at Kattankulatur, Kancheepuram district, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Trichy and one in Modinagar, near Delhi. Previously functioning under Anna University, as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed SRMIST (SRM Institute of Science and Technology) and then eventually called SRM University.
Awards and Rankings
SRM University at Chennai was rated by the Times of India in an Education Times-Gfk Mode study as the best private engineering university in India [1]. It was also ranked as the top university in India in the multiple streams category viz., engineering and medicine in the same survey. SRM Medical was ranked as the third-best private medical university in India[2]. In 2009 the university was awarded a "Managerial Excellence award" by the Madras Management Association (MMA)[3][4]
History
The beginnings of the college can be traced back to 1968. The Valliammai Society was founded by Mr.T.R.Pachamuthu. He started a primary school called Florence Nightingale School (now the SRM Nightingale School). From there onwards, there was no looking back. The SRM Group now has several institutions and organizations under its belt. A few noted institutions are as follows. SRM University, Valliammai Engineering Collge, SRM Polytechnic, Valliammai Polytechnic, SRM Medical college and hospital, SRM dental college, SRM school of management, SRM school of journalism, SRM institute of catering and hotel management, Geetha Constructions, SRM Hotels, SRM Printers, SRM Benefit Fund Ltd., SRM Systems and Software, SRM Easwari Travels and Tours India(P) Ltd., Blossom Infotech, etc.
The Campus Infrastructure

Admission is granted on the basis of the candidate's performance in the Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by SRM University Candidates short-listed based on their performance in the entrance examination are called for counseling to the University.
B.Arch. Program
Admission to the B.Arch. program is based on the aggregate of marks secured in the qualifying examination & the NATA score.Meritorious candidates are selected by giving 50% weight age to aggregate of total marks secured in qualifying examination & 50% weight age to NATA score.Admissions are granted based on the rankings.
B.Des.Program
Admission to B.Des program will be purely on the basis of performance in the Higher Secondary examination. Candidates short listed based on their Higher Secondary marks will be offered admission directly.
M.Tech. Program
Admission to this program will be on the basis of performance in the Entrance Test conducted by SRM University. However candidate with valid GATE score can also apply and will be considered for admission. Merit list will be prepared and candidates will be called for counseling.
M. S.
The Admission Committee will decide on the procedure for conducting the interview for eligible candidates, as decided by the committee from year to year, and the percentage of marks obtained in specified subjects of the qualifying examinations will be considered. The Admission Committee will prepare a merit list and offer admissions through counseling, taking into account the professional experience of the candidate and the number of seats available.
M.S.(Nanoscience and Nanotechnology)
Admission to this program will be on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Merit list will be prepared and candidates will be called for counseling.
Education
Top ranking students are given the opportunity to spend a semester in institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Carnegie Melon University (USA), University of California - Davis (USA), University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (USA), SUNY - Buffalo (USA), Northeastern University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Medicine - Josh Laboratory (USA), University of Western Australia (Australia), Birmingham City University (UK), Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan), Lille Catholic University (France), Technical University Chemnitz (Germany), Umea University (Sweden)[5][6]. Around 104 students were selected for this Semester Abroad Program (SAP) in 2008.[1] [2] A few were offered scholarships while most of the students were supported by their family, during their time abroad.
SRM University has a special arrangement with the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (USA) to transfer students at the end of the 3rd year for a comprehensive two-year BS + MS program at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. SRM also has a dual degree program with the University of Warwick (UK) in the area of Plant Biotechnology. A similar program is being worked out in co-operation with Dundee University (UK).[7]
Placement
Companies that visit the campus for recruitment include ABN-Amro, Coke, HP, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sanmar Group, Titan Industries, Accenture, EDS, Hyundai, Mindtree, Satyam, TVS Group, AIG Systems, Essar Group, ICICI, Minda Group, Schneider, TVS Sundaram-Clayton, Areva T&D, Ford, I-Flex Solutions, Maveric Systems, Siemens, Technip, Amada Soft, Foster Wheeler, Infosys, Maytas, Sapient, US Technology, Bajaj, FL Smidth, Intel, Murugappa Group, Sonata, Vendata, Birla Soft, HCL, I-Gate, NIIT Technologies, SPIC Group, Vizual Business Tool, Caritor, HDFC, JSW Steel, Oracle, Standard Chartered, Wipro, Caterpillar, HSBC, Keane, Patni, TATA Group, XANSA, Citigroup, Hexaware, Reliance, Reliance, TATA Consultancy, Cognizant, Honeywell, L&T ECC Division, Ramco, TATA ELXSI etc.
Research and Development
Research and Development is of paramount importance at SRM University and it boasts of a state-of-the-art nanotechnology laboratory. Students, right from undergraduates to PhDs, are encouraged to think independently and are inspired by the able and experienced faculty to author research papers in their chosen field of interest. The close proximity of the technology and biology/medical faculties helps in the research and development works in new fields that fall in the intersection of biology and engineering streams (biotechnology, genetic engineering, biomedical engineering etc).
Examination System
Each academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester has three internal exams and one final exam (semester exam) for all theory subjects. For laboratory courses there is usually one internal exam followed by the final exam. Most of the exams are theoretical and like most other engineering colleges in India.
University Status
The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is also accredited by the NAAC National Assessment and Accreditation Council.[8].It has been given an overall grade of B+ by NAAC.
Controversies
In 2006, AICTE issued a warning notice that degrees awarded by deemed universities (like SRM) would not be recognized unless the courses were approved by it. Following this, a legal battle ensued with the institution arguing that they had the approval of the University Grants Commission and that they did not come under the purview of AICTE. Later, the Madras High Court ruled that UGC has "primacy" over AICTE in matters of deemed universities[9].
The initial issue of above warning notice, by AICTE, sparked a violent clash between the students of SRM and police, in the February of 2006. While the students claim that it was the management who brought in henchmen and the police to violently act against them when they tried forcing the management to come clean on matters of recognition of its courses, the police defended their hard actions saying that the students indulged in vandalism amounting to a loss of Rs.3 crore [10].
The students are usually allowed to see the corrected internal examinations. However like many other Universities, students are not allowed to see their evaluated final exam answer sheets, in spite of the Right to Information Act giving students the right to see them.
