The writing system quốc ngữ, which means "national language", is the official writing script of Vietnam. It gained official status during the early 20th century under French rule, replacing the ideographic-based chữ nôm and chữ nho scripts. "Quốc ngữ" was introduced in the 17th century by Alexandre de Rhodes and gained popularity in the 19th century due to French rule. By the late 20th century, almost all Vietnamese writings used this script.
