The journal was established in 1881. The magazine includes academic articles, review articles, news stories and debate about the professional issues and education, as well as discussion of medical education. Scientific papers must be based on a study, preferably with a statistical treatment of a larger material. Articles subjected to a rigorous editorial treatment with peer review, often with many rounds of changes at the authors.

The journal accepts advertising for prescription drugs that cannot be legally advertised to the general public. It also includes advertisements for specialist practices and private hospitals. The editor is Charlotte Haug (2006) .

The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association (in Norwegian, Tidsskrift for Den norske legeforening , and from 1881 until 2008 Tidsskrift for Den norske lægeforening) is a medical journal published by the Norwegian Medical Association (Den norske lægeforening), published 24 times a year and sent to all members of the Norwegian Medical Association.
