Cassandra Claire is an American author of fanfiction and fantasy literature.
She is particularly noted for her creation of The Very Secret Diaries, a series of satirical slash fiction stories written in the form of diary entries by various characters in the Lord of the Rings movies following the release of The Fellowship of the Ring. The Very Secret Diaries are written in a style made famous in Helen Fielding's ''Bridget Jones's Diary''. The stories were widely read both within and outside of the fanfiction community, and were something of a brief Internet fad. Claire wrote a handful more stories with the release of The Two Towers, but then abandoned the series.
Claire also writes Harry Potter fanfiction, most prominently the highly pop-culture-referential Draco Trilogy. The three novels prominently feature the character Draco Malfoy. They are written with roughly the same style and tone as Rowling's books, though Claire writes from the point of view of several characters rather than just Harry and her writing features a higher level of sexuality. Within the Harry Potter fan community Claire is widely considered to be a Big Name Fan.
The Draco trilogy was mentioned favorably in a London Times article on fan fiction:
- [A]mid the pedestrian offerings (and there are plenty) there is the occasional gem of such superlative quality that it enhances one’s appreciation of the original. One from the Harry Potter genre is The Draco Trilogy by a twenty-something New Yorker who writes under the pseudonym Cassandra Claire[.] — [1]
Claire has signed a deal with Simon & Schuster to publish her original fantasy writings, the Mortal Instruments trilogy, with the first installment, City of Bones, to be published in 2007.
