Cubans in the United Kingdom are Cuban people who were born in or have migrated to the United Kingdom.

The majority settled in the Greater London area after fleeing political persecution and the Communist government in the 1970's and 80's.

According to the 2001 Census, there were 1,083 Cuban-born people living in the UK.[1] In 2001, the UK held host to the sixth largest number of Cuban emigrants on the planet (behind the USA, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Canada respectively).[1]

Cuban culture in the UK

The main contribution of Cubans in the UK has been through the introduction of bars and restaurants specialising in Cuban cuisine as well as the ever-growing popularity of Salsa Music via various bars and clubs. As far as events go, the Carnival de Cuba is one the largest free festivals celebrating Cuban Culture in Europe, held in London's Southwark Park and featuring live Salsa bands, Reggaeton artists both native and foreign, dance, food, drink, and kid's events. The event is normally held around June. The event regularly has attendances in excess of 50,000 people and attracts some of the top Salsa bands from around the world.

In 2008 alone Carnival de Cuba attracted over 60,000 visitors.[2]

Notable individuals

Notable Cuban individuals in the UK include:

In January 2001, the corpses of two stowaway Cubans, Alberto Vazquez, 17, and Maikel Fonseca, 16 were discovered (one at Gatwick Airport and one in a Surrey field) after hiding in the undercarriage of a London-bound British Airways jet from the Cuban capital Havana.[3] This event shocked Cuba and even saw a personal investigation by then Cuban President Fidel Castro.[citation needed]
