Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is a psychiatric hospital and behavioral health provider, with the main treatment campus located in Cutlerville, Michigan. The Chief Executive Officer and President is Dr. Mark Eastburg, appointed December, 2006..

It was founded in 1910 as the Christian Psychopathic Hospital.

Pine Rest is one of the five largest free-standing behavioral health providers in the U.S., offering a full continuum of services including addiction treatment and recovery, extensive child and adolescent programs, senior care services, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). In addition to the main campus in Grand Rapids, Pine Rest also has 20 outpatient locations throughout West Michigan and two in Iowa.

Pine Rest's inpatient hospitalization program is licensed for 170 beds, with residential services for adolescent boys and girls; older adults coping with dementia; those needing addiction services (Freedom House,Jellema House, JF Jellema Treatment Center, Women's Lodge and Recovery Residence); those in need of sub-acute detoxification program services; and developmentally disabled persons.

Rustic Market Thrift Store

Rustic Market Thrift Store, 389 68th St. SE in Cutlerville. Aside from clothes, shoes and books, items commonly found at thrift stores include gently used housewares, electronics, refurbished computers, jewelry, antiques, toys, sporting goods, furniture and much more.

Proceeds from the Rustic Market are used to extend the ministry of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services through the Patient Assistance Fund. The fund provides financial assistance to individuals, children, and families in the community who need mental health care, but have little or no means to pay for services. Since opening in 1971, the Rustic Market has generated over $1 million for PAF.

"Business has been fabulous over the last six months or so. We've experienced a gradual increase in sales and we've seen more customers over the last several weeks," said Barb VanDyk, staff member at the Rustic Market.

InterActions Residential Treatment Center

Pine Rest opened the InterActions Residential Treatment Center at its main campus. The new $1.5 million, 14,000-square-foot (1,300 m²) residential treatment center will focus on illness management and recovery.

The secured, 16-bed residential treatment center was designed for helping adults with chronic and/or persistent mental illness, including those with co-occurring mild development disabilities and mental illnesses.

Following an average of 90 to 120 days in residence, Pine Rest administrators hope the active recovery-based treatment model will help patients overcome their struggles and allow them to return to their communities in a safer, healthier manner.

The new facility created 30 local, professional jobs for those focusing on understanding illnesses, medication management, and community management skills. New jobs include 24-hour positions in psychiatry, psychology, nursing, therapy, social work, and case work and more.

Pine Rest administrators Developmental Enhancement, led by David Laman, Ph.D., is a group of professionals in developmental disabilities and related mental health issues who provide clinical expertise to individuals, families, and organizations on a regional and national basis. The model being implemented is one that provides intensive, 24-hour-per-day treatment in a secure setting.

The building includes a commons area including televisions and phones. Three conference rooms may be used by visiting families or for group meetings. A full functioning laundry facility and kitchen is open for use. Recreationally, a gymnasium is available, as well as outdoor activities including volleyball and plans for a future basketball court.

Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship and Education

The hospital recently opened the Gerald & Jane-Ann Postma Center for Worship and Education, a $3.7 million training center targeted at nursing, behavior health and pastoral students and Pine Rest staff members. With more than 15,000 square feet (1,400 m²), the center can accommodate groups of as many as 500 people in five multi-purpose rooms. It is expected to be used by behavior health students from across the state and nursing students from Michigan State University, Calvin College, Grand Valley State University and several other local colleges. It also houses a chapel for campus residents and for training pastoral education students. Officials believe the new facility enhances Pine Rest's statewide role as a training and education axis through features such as computerized projectors, mobile white boards and large projector screens.

The Bruce and Mary Leep Art Gallery, inside the Postma Center for Worship and Education at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, 300 68th St. SE., features a rotating calendar of art shows, featuring the inspirational works of many local artists.

Professional Lecture Series and Institute for Spiritual Care

Pine Rest sponsors a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year for professionals. The Professional Lecture Series is an educational lecture series offered by Pine Rest on various medical and clinical topics for working professionals with MERC accreditation.

Workshops and support groups are also available to the public and include but are not limited to: anger management for adults and teens, eating disorders, families living with mental illness, dementia.

Pine Rest’s Family Institute facilitates lecture, training and certification programs for individuals, agencies, clergy, and churches through the Marriage and Family Building Series, FOCCUS Training, Family Wellness Training and the Institute for Spiritual Care Lecture Series.

Pine Rest seeks to incorporate faith and healing into the care of patients. The hospital also has an active chaplain service in order to offer spiritual care to the patients. In addition, Clinical Pastoral Education is offered through Pine Rest.

Renewing Spirits Bicycle Tour

Cal Meuzelaar, a social worker at Pine Rest's Des Moines, Iowa clinic has completed his transcontinental bicycle tour on September 28, by finishing the final 52 miles (84 km) into Des Moines. The trip took 3,873 miles (6,233 km) over 49 days, where he averaged 79 miles per day.

Meuzelaar dedicated his efforts toward raising $100,000 for clients. The journey, dubbed the "Renewing Spirits Bicycle Tour," began in Florence, Oregon to Salem, Massachusetts and ending in Des Moines, Iowa. Meuzelaar's wife, Mary, drove along in a support vehicle.

Muezelaar's motivation is to help people who need financial support in order to access needed mental health counseling plus assistance with covering gaps of insurance coverage due to the current socio-economic crisis. .
