==Geography==
Stilwell is located at {{coord|35|48|55|N|94|37|53|W|city}} (35.815234, -94.631359){{GR|1}}.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of 3.2&nbsp;[[square mile]]s (8.3&nbsp;[[km²]]), of which, 3.2&nbsp;square miles (8.2&nbsp;km²) of it is land and 0.04&nbsp;square miles (0.1&nbsp;km²) of it (0.63%) is water.

Stilwell is located at the intersection of [[U.S. Highway 59 (Oklahoma)|U.S. Highway 59]] and [[State Highway 51 (Oklahoma)|State Highway 51]].

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of 2000, there were 3,276 people, 1,269 households, and 809 families residing in the city. The [[population density]] was 1,033.7 people per square mile (399.0/km²). There were 1,434 housing units at an average density of 452.5/sq&nbsp;mi (174.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 41.88% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.49% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 48.41% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.21% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.03% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 3.45% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 5.53% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 6.99% of the population. At 48.57% Cherokee, Stilwell is the most Cherokee community in the United States.

There were 1,269 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 17.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $18,555, and the median income for a family was $24,673. Males had a median income of $20,500 versus $17,351 for females. About 28.3% of families and 32.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 42.6% of those under age 18 and 20.4% of those age 65 or over.
