Honey (Turkish: Bal) is a 2010 Turkish drama film directed by Semih Kaplanoğlu, the third and final installment of the "Yusuf Trilogy", which includes Egg and Milk.[1] It premiered on 16 February 2010 in competition at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival,[1][2][3] where it won the coveted Golden Bear award.[4][5] It was the first time since 1964 that a Turkish film won the Golden Bear.[5]

Background

Bal is one of a trilogy, preceded by Milk and Egg.[5] It was shot in the mountains of Turkey.[5] It was jointly produced by Germany and Turkey.[6]

Plot

In the remote and undeveloped eastern Black Sea region, a six-year-old boy searches for his lost father, trying to make sense of his life. He wanders through the woods.[5] His father is a beekeeper.[5] The bees disappear unexpectedly.[5] A bizarre accident kills the father.[7] The voice does not talk anymore.[8] There is not much speech or music throughout this film.[5]

Cast

Golden Bear award

Bal beat 19 other films from around the world to win the Golden Bear award.[7][9] Its win was seen as a "surprise" by some.[10] Kaplanoğlu reacted by recalling an encounter with a bear while filming, “The bear is now back.”[9] At a press conference the director said: "In the name of Turkish Films, this is a very meaningful prize. It's a help to making better films".[11]

The film is scheduled to go on general release across Turkey on 12 March 2010.
