Ron McGovney (born November 2, 1962, Los Angeles, California) is an American musician most notable for being Metallica's first bassist when they formed in the early 1980s. McGovney is of Scottish descent.
Metallica
Childhood friend, James Hetfield and Ron were in a band called Leather Charm, along with guitar player Hugh Tanner. Tanner later decided that he wanted to pursue music management, and left the band. James and Ron then met guitarist Troy James and drummer Jim Mulligan, the latter of whom left the band shortly afterward. After Leather Charm's breakup, James and Ron met with Lars Ulrich, whom James met through an advertisement looking for band mates. Then, when James, Lars and Ron met guitarist Dave Mustaine, Metallica was officially born.
McGovney's time with the band was reportedly not enjoyable. McGovney found himself clashing often with Lars and Dave[1]. McGovney felt he was being used more for "monetary management" and "transportation" than as a respected member of the band. Consequently, McGovney began to grow tired of acting as unofficial manager.[1]
