History

Tiruppur known by various names such as Knit city, Cotton city is famously called the Textile city of India, it is also a Historical Centre.

Tiruppur the name has emerged during the epic ages .it has been said that the shepherds of pandavas were stolen by thieves and the same was recaptured by his forces. That's why it is known as Thiruppu=turn oor=place. This has also been mentioned in the official website of the Tirupur district.it is also clear from the old name of Dharapuram which is "Viradapuram", where the name is also been quoted in verses of Mahabaratham. Evidences of ancient city of Tiruppur has been collected as coins, old pottery items found in many places of the modern city during excavation for new buildings.

Some of the earliest Chola stone carvings have mentioned about "Kanchi Maanadhi" (the Noyyal River) and about the fertile sand that it deposits on its banks. It is evident from it that the land around Tiruppur was fertile and thus agriculture flourished in the region. That's why today too Tiruppur is a centre for trading of cotton, vegetables etc.,. The Visveswaraswamy temple at the heart of the city is one of the oldest temples in this region. It has been said by ancestors that the "Lingam" (the statue of Lord Shiva) that is present in this temple was left by a Chola king when he was carrying this idol from Kasi. Also the Chellandi Amman temple situated at the banks of River Noyyal has some idols that are based on the early Chola style architecture.

Tirupur has carved its name in the Indian history even before the independence of India. The legendary Kongu chieftain and Palayakkarar, Dheeran Chinnamalai fought against the British forces and was hanged in the Sankagiri Fort by the British. Before his hanging he was fighting the British and many places in and around Tirupur were known to be his dwelling places. Tiruppur Kumaran, one of the freedom fighters was killed during lathi charge when he was on a patriotic march in the Kumaran Road against the British without letting down Indian National Flag. It still remains as a great inspiration to the people of the city. Tirupur's main road is named after Kumaran.[4]

Another notable incident is that C. N. Annadurai, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu met Periyar E. V. Ramasamy for the first time in Tirupur during Periyar's campaign which is considered to be a turning point in the Indian political history.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[5] Tirupur had a population of 346,551. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tirupur has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 69%. In Tiruppur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The city's population is predominantly Hindu, along with sizeable Muslim and Christian populations. Sikhs and Jains are also nowadays present in small numbers. The Kongu Vellalar Gounder are the major population in and around the city. The city has a significant number of Chettiars . The city also has many Keralites mainly from Palakkad (once part of Kongu Nadu) and North Indians like Jains and Marwaris, who are engaged in trade and commerce. Nowadays people even from the North-Eastern states of India, like Manipur and Nagaland have also moved in for jobs in tiruppur.

Tirupur also has large people working for Textile and Dyeing industrial units who hire people mostly from various southern districts of Tamilnadu viz., Tirucharapalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. They are usually unskilled labours but still get a decent pay compared to other places in South India. Large number of people also from other South Indian states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Nowadays there are also people coming from the Indian States of Orissa and Bihar to work in the garment processing factories in and around the Tirupur city.

Climate

Tiruppur has a pleasant, salubrious climate, not reaching the high temperatures of other southern India cities. Situated in the Western part of the state of Tamil Nadu, tiruppur is located at an elevation of about 310 meters. The mean maximum and minimum temperatures during summer and winter varies between 35°C to 18°C. highest temperature ever recorded is 41 °C and lowest is 12 °C.

Due to the presence of the mountain pass, major parts of the district benefit from the south-west monsoon in the months from June to August. After a warm, humid September, the regular monsoon starts from October lasting till early November. These monsoons are brought about by the retreating North-eastern monsoon. The average annual rainfall is around 700 mm with the North East and the South West monsoons contributing to 47% and 28% respectively to the total rainfall.

The soil is predominantly black, which is suitable for cotton cultivation, but it also has some red loamy soil. Along with Coimbatore ,Tirupur also falls under the Class III/IV Seismic Zone, having experienced a 6.0 Richter scale earthquake in 1900.[6] The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History is located at Anaikatty in Coimbatore district, which is near to Tirupur

An MP constituency also had been created in the name of Tirupur containing parts of Coimbatore, Gobi, Palani MP constituency.

Economy

Tirupur is the "Knitwear capital" of India. It has spurred up the textile industry in India for the past three decades. Its economic boom boosts the morale of Indian industrialists. It contributes to a huge amount of foreign exchange in India.

Industry

Tirupur --- Fastest Growing Industrial City

Tirupur has the largest and fastest growing urban agglomerations in Tamilnadu.tirupur stands as the life for millions of people in tamilnadu.the kniterar industry which is the soul of tiruppur has created millions of jobs for all class of people.there are nearly about 3000 sewing units,450 knitting units, hundreds of dyeing units and other ancillary units wich are un countable.

the annual forex business for the past year 2008 stands at 8000 crore.Due to the climate and availability of raw material and work force tiruppur has had made a large contribution to the export of knitwear garments.

[7]

International Brands

It is called the Knits Capital of India as it caters to famous brands retailers from all over the world. Nearly every international knitwear brand in the world has a strong production share from Tirupur.

It has a wide range of factories which export all types of Knits fabrics and supply garments for Kids, Ladies, Men's garments - both underwear and tops. The city is known for its hosiery exports and provides employment for about 300,000 people.[citation needed]

Some of the world's largest retailers including C&A, Walmart, Primark, Switcher, Diesel, ARMY, Tommy Hilfiger, M&S, FILA, H&M, HTHP, Whale, Reebok import many textiles items and clothing from Tirupur city. A large market for export reject pieces also exists centered in the Khaderpet locality close to the railway station.

Infrastructure Facilities Required

Even though the city is very prosperous, the infrastructure is very minimal. The city grew very quickly due to the high demand for manufacturing for the popular clothing brands mostly in the United States of America and Europe. But the modern machinery used and the availability of skilled labour enabled this city to prosper and be competitive internationally.

The lack of infrastructure facilities comparatively for the foreign exchange which the city brings is a big negative point to be noticed. The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) and other associations are taking actions directly to get some sort of facilities done (like the third water scheme and NAP).

Good Growth Rate and TEA--- Tirupur Exporters Association

Tirupur is also known for its companies which have achieved major certificates and is showing an average growth of 40% per year since 1990.[8]

The association formed by the Exporters of Tirupur (TEA) is one of the most successful association in India trying hard and been successful in helping the trade in Tirupur.

New Tirupur is a small new town (Industrial Park) growing in Tirupur formed and working as NAP by the exporters. It is an appropriate example for the future of Tirupur.

Suburban Rail Transport System --- A Future Requirement

The traffic in this region is very heavy as the floating population is huge. Labourers arrive from different corners of Tirupur for the purpose of work in the morning and leave to their places in the evening. This results in heavy traffic jam and also makes the buses overcrowded.

A Suburban rail transport system similar to that of Delhi METRO or Chennai MRTS is the need of the hour.
