Route description

CR 301

County Route 301 begins at an intersection with NY 443 (named the Delaware Turnpike) in the Albany County town of New Scotland. The route progresses to the southeast, with the route passing through lands of moderate development. The highway, known locally as Tarrytown Road, leaves the populous area rather suddenly and heads through the undeveloped woodlands in Albany County. The route heads along a stretch of highway full of bends and curves, until a southern progression brings it into the local hamlet of Tarrytown (not to be confused with the one in Westchester County).[3]

The first signage for NY 396 at the eastern terminus of County Route 301. The sign depicting the end of CR 301 is visible

In Tarrytown, CR 301 serves the eastern terminus of CR 109 (Lawson Lake Road), and turns eastward along Tarrytown Road out of the community. A short distance later, the highway turns to the southeast and intersects with NY 32 (Indian Fields Road) northeast of the community of Clarksville. After the intersection with NY 32, the highway heads even further to the southeast, this time known as Cedar Grove Road. The highway progresses to the southeast through local woodlands before curving to the east once again at an intersection with CR 108 (Copeland Hill Road). CR 301 continues eastward toward the community of South Bethlehem; however, CR 301 itself never reaches the hamlet as the highway becomes maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation at a junction with CR 103 (Blodgett Hill Road).[3]

NY 396

At the intersection with CR 103, CR 301 ends and becomes NY 396, reflecting the change in maintenance. At that intersection, the highway changes names from Cedar Grove Road to Bridge Street. NY 396 progresses eastward, intersecting with local roads in the undeveloped lowlands. At the intersection with CR 102 (Old Quarry Road), the highway enters Spawn Hollow, a local hamlet. After that intersection, NY 396 becomes more developed, entering South Bethlehem, and intersecting with several local roads.[4]

After South Bethlehem, NY 396 enters the hamlet of Bethlehem Heights, where the highway curves to the northeast. NY 396 passes over the Selkirk Subdivision, a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation, at the eastern edge of the large Selkirk Yard. Past the bridge, the highway turns eastward and into the hamlet of Beckers Corners, where it intersects with U.S. Route 9W. After that intersection, NY 396 turns to the southeast once again, leaving its original right-of-way along Maple Avenue at an intersection with Beaverdam Road. The route bends several times in a highly developed region as it enters the community of Selkirk. NY 396 turns eastward and terminates at an intersection with NY 144 (River Road) east of Selkirk. Not far to the north of the junction, NY 144 connects to the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) at exit 22.[4]

NY 396 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York and has not been altered since.[2]
