Choudenshi Bioman (超電子バイオマン, Chōdenshi Baioman), translated into English as Super Electronic Bioman, is Toei Company's eighth installment in the Super Sentai series. It was aired on TV Asahi from February 4, 1984 to January 26, 1985, with a total of 51 episodes, as well as a movie.

Choudenshi Bioman was the first Super Sentai to do many things that would become common place in later installments. Bioman was the first series to have two women on the team at once, and the first to feature a female hero in yellow; she was eventually killed, making Bioman the first series to kill off a female hero. However, Bioman was fairly unique in that the man-sized monsters fought early each episode were not the same as the large monsters fought later in the episodes. Bioman was the first series to have the show's full title to be cried at the beginning of the opening sequence, as opposed to the previous two shows that announce only the title.

Plot

Many centuries ago, the android Peebo and the Bio Robo came to Earth from the fallen Bio Star. The Bio Robo showered five people with the Bio Particles, which would be passed on to later generations. In the present day, Doctor Man and his Shin Teikoku (New Empire) Gear threaten the world. Peebo must find the descendants of the original Bio Particle-showered five to form the Choudenshi (Super Electronic) Bioman team.

Other important characters will be introduced, including bio-hunter Silva, Dr Shibata and young Shinichi Kageyama.

Characters

Biomen

The Biomen are the descendants of five people showered with Bio Particles centuries ago. They are found by Peebo in modern times and given Techno Braces (テクノブレス, Tekuno Buresu) to communicate and transform. To transform individually they call their color and number and to transform as a group they call Bioman, By raising their hands, clenching their left fists and holding them with their right palms. Although in episode 1, they transformed one by one shouting "Bioman", since they do not know their respective ranger designations; their designations may have later came from their order of transformation (Shirou, Shingo, Ryuuta, Mika and Hikaru). Along with their Bio Swords (バイオソード, Baio Sōdo), a versatile sidearm with sword, dagger, and blaster modes, the Biomen are fairly unique in that they have a variety of team attacks, including the Bio Electron Beam (バイオエレクトロビーム, Baio Erekutoron Bīmu), and the Miracle Laser (ミラクルレーザー, Mirakuru Rēzā).

Shiro Gou (郷史朗, Gō Shirō)/Red One (レッドワン, Reddo Wan)
At 24, he is the pilot of the first Japanese space shuttle. Unfortunately, he gets caught in the crossfire just as the Gear begins the invasion. In him, passion and responsibility unite in an unusual combination. He possessed a charm since he was born. He grew up believing that his father was dead. However, after meeting Professor Shibata, even he is not so sure. Armed with Fire Sword (ファイヤーソード, Faiyā Sōdo) and Spark Sword (スパークソード, Supāku Sōdo), and using the Super Electronic Radar (超電子レーダー, Chōdenshi Rēdā) special attack. 16 years after Bioman ended, Red One appeared in Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai as one of 24 Red Rangers introduced by his Liveman successor Red Falcon, to inspire the Gaoranger team. In the English version, his name is Kenny.

He is the designated driver of the Bio Turbo. Armed with Hurricane Sword (ハリケーンソード, Harikēn Sōdo) and Green Boomerang (グリーンブメラング, Gurīn Bumerangu), as well as Super Electronic Scope (超電子スコープ, Chōdenshi Sukōpu) and Break Action (ブレイクアクション, Bureiku Akushon) special attacks. His years of diving have made him very nimble; thus, he is very skilled in stealth techniques. He wields the Super Electronic Ear (超電子イヤー, Chōdenshi Iyā) and Elec-Sword (エレキソード, Ereki Sōdo). His special attack is Super Sky Diving (スーパースカイダイビング, Sūpā Sukai Daibingu). English version is: Frankie
Mika Koizumi (小泉ミカ, Koizumi Mika, 1-9)/Yellow Four I (1初代イエローフォー, Shodai Ierō Fō, 1-10)
A photographer who dreams of following in her brother's footseps to photograph the wildlife in Africa. Initially, she is hesitant to join the Bioman team. However, she is convinced when she realizes that if she does not fight, then the animals in Africa that she loves will eventually be in danger. She was killed by repeated Anti-Bio Particle blasts from the Bio Killer Gun to save the others (and she was severely blasted by Psygorn after the Bio Killer Gun ran out of ammunition) which Peebo later recalls during Silva's first appearance. Her weapon was the Thunder Sword (サンダーソード, Sandā Sōdo). Her special attacks were Super Electronic Holography (超電子ホログラフィ, Chōdenshi Horogurafi) and Yellow Flash. Near the end of episode 10, Bio Robo's eyes glowed activating her computer system in her helmet and later activated her super electronic holography from her visor showin a footage of her (which was actually her shot at the end credits). From the start of episode 10 up to her subsequent death, wake and/or funeral, she remained in her yellow 4 suit. English version is: Casey
Jun Yabuki (矢吹ジュン, Yabuki Jun)/Yellow Four II (2代目イエローフォー, Nidaime Ierō Fō, 11-51)
An Olympic archer. 19 years old, sometimes dressing up like an American Indian cowgirl/Indian hybrid outfit. After watching the Bioman in action, she tries to join them but is initially refused, even though Mika Koizumi had just died; the others were looking for another descendant of the original five who were bombarded with the Bio Particles. However, she proves her courage, and it was discovered that she also has Bio Particles. Her weapons are Bio Arrow (バイオアロー, Baio Arō) and Thunder Sword (サンダーソード, Sandā Sōdo). She plays the flute both to calm her spirits and to strengthen her resolve. She is able to befriend the evil computer Brain and teach him about friendship, which pays off when Brain sacrifices himself to save the Bioman as well as the world from destruction. She is also the most emotional member of the team, especially when crying. She wields the Super Electronic Beamlight (超電子ビームライト, Chōdenshi Bīmuraito), Pink Barrier (ピンクバリヤー, Pinku Bariyā), and Laser Sword (レーザーソード, Rēzā Sōdo). Her special attacks are Pink Flash (ピンクフラッシュ, Pinku Furasshu) and Spin Chop (スピンチョップ, Supin Choppu). English version is: Kimberly

Team Attacks

Unlike most sentai, the Biomen used several team attacks. These are:

  • Bio Miracle Wave- The Biomen use their swords to fire an elemental beam. It was first used in episode one against Messerjuu.
  • Bio Revolver : The Biomen execute a spinning attack to send the opponent away. It was used only in episode two against Psygorn.
  • Bio Burn Bar: The Bioman sends a series of energy blasts from the ground. It was used only in episode three against Juu-oh and later in the movie.
  • Bio Team Kick : The Biomen execute the Bio kick together. It was first used in episode four against Mettzler and later as a counterattack when Mettlzer was upgraded.
  • Bio Electron Beam : The Bioman are firing the pistols at the monster together. It was first used in episode five against Beast King. It was later used as a counterattack against an upgraded Psygorn.
  • Bio Miracle Beam : The Bioman are firing a series of energy beams from the forehead. It was first used in episode eight against Messerjuu.
  • Bio Big Bow : This attack arrived when Jun Yabuki replaced Mika Koizumi. It was first used in episode 13 against Messerjuu.
  • Bio Electron Charge : In episode 34, the Biomen create a new technique to defeat stronger Juunoids.

Neo Empire Gear

The Neo Empire Gear (新帝国ギア, Shin Teikoku Gia) was founded and led by the cyborg Doctor Man, from his Neo Grad fortress at the South Pole. The bulk of their forces is composed of five cybernetic monsters known as the Beastnoids, and of generic android soldiers known as the Mecha Clones. Farrah is also assisted by Farrah Cat. Their motto in English dubbed is "For the man".

  • Doctor Man (ドクターマン, Dokutā Man): The supreme ruler of the Neo Empire. Once human, he was known as Doctor Kageyama Hideo (English version is: Mike Ohara). He experimented on himself aiming to be the most intelligent being on Earth only to have his body age quickly in the process. To extend his life, he cybernized himself and later apparently became a completely mechanical being. He developed a deep disgust for humanity, and plans to conquer the world with his army of mecha humans. When his assistants were failing, he created the Black Prince in the image of his real son Shuichi. He tried to get Shuichi to join them but failed. He eventually was prepared for any conspiracy against him and later reprogrammed the Big Three and reorganized the empire. With his empire dying, he goes and fights the Biomen with the Kingmegas only to be defeated. He activated the Neo Bomb but he ended up stopping it when his son and the Biomen prodded him eventually resulting to his death.
  • Big Three (1-50) - The three android generals who supervise field missions. They can also disguise themselves as Humans
    • Mason (メイスン, Meisun): The leader of the Big Three. Murdered Mika Koizumi, the original Yellow Four with the Bio Killer Gun(which resembles a sniper rifle with a magazine of a tommy gun) while he originally planned to kill Gou Shirou. He once plotted against Doctor Man himself after he found out Doctor Man was a human being. He is armed with a staff which fires energy bolts which was later broken in half by Red One. He later fired an energy bolt to Red One from his chest after his Staff was Broken. Doctor Man apparently puts more importance on him than the other two. He later shares a close relationship with Farrah. He was later rebuilt and armed with Mason Rockets and Mason Machine Gun. He is the frequent rival of Red One. He was eventually killed by Silva. Before dying, he was able to utter his last words "for the man" and eventually exploded.
    • Farrah (ファラ, Fara): The female member of the Big Three, she uses beam weapons and leaves the dirty fighting to Farrah Cat. She often disguises herself as human in her schemes, favoring cunning and deception above brutal force. She used to show resentment towards Mason but later developed a close relationship with him starting with the plot to steal gold bars which Mason designed. Later rebuilt and armed with Farrah Fire Storm and Farrah Kiss (blows an explosive flying kiss). She is rivals with Yellow Four and Pink Five. She died after receiving damage in battle while piloting Balzion.
    • Monster (モンスター, Monsutā): He is as strong as a whale and less than half as smart. He likes to work with the monster Beast King frequently, though he worked with Messerjuu and Aquagaiger at one point. He was later upgraded and armed with Black Mace, Iron Paw. Despite being an android, he is revealed to have feelings for Farrah which she resents and Mason considers it disgusting suggesting a love triangle. He was killed while trying to capture Balzion. English version is: Vargo
  • Farrah Cat (ファラキャット, Fara Kyatto): Farrah's android bodyguard who does the dirty work. Dressed in black and purple skins, she is quick, agile and acrobatic. She has claws for weapons and uses twin nunchukus as well. She is Yellow Four's frequent rival and at times Pink Five. Only troop not to receive an upgrade, and the last to be destroyed before Dr. Man. She was killed in the final episode by Yellow Four and Pink Five who blew off her circuits with a full blast.
  • Mecha Clones (メカクローン, Mekakurōn): The robotic foot soldiers of the empire in black with silver heads and red eyes. They can be programmed to pilot Mecha Drones or act as laboratory assistants. Others were designed for special purposes. The only advanced mechaclones were the Black Prince and Miki.

Beastnoids

Unlike other Super Sentai series, the monsters Bioman fight do not start small and become giants when defeated. Instead, Gear uses the five Beastnoids, recurring mechanical monsters that fight the Biomen at normal size. Beast King is Monster's underling, and while the other members of Big Three sometimes display a preference for a certain Beastnoid, he is the only one to be designated a "master". In episode 31 and in the movie, all five Beastnoids are present and perform their very own roll-call, similar to the Biomen led by Beast King.

  • Psygorn (サイゴーン, Saigōn) - A three faced psychic monster with the ability to spew fire and uses telekinesis and teleportation. He is the mightiest of all five as he caused serious problems to the Biomen in battle. He was at first working with Farrah but as time passed, he became Mason's closest ally where he also took part in killing Mika Koizumi after the Bio Killer Gun was empty in battle, although he was with Farrah when the latter confronted Mika in episode 2. Later upgraded with energy beams and stronger fire powers. He is rivals with Red One, Blue Three, Yellow Four II and Pink Five. He is the last Beastnoid to be killed and was destroyed by heavy damage caused by Red One and the Biomen, while trying to protect Mason of which he told the latter to get away.
  • Mettzler (メッツラー, Mettsurā) - A one-eyed spy monster with the ability to fire plasma bolts, turn into plasma and create holograms. Farrah's preferred Beastnoid, he is a cunning and dangerous opponent who uses deceptive tactics like his mistress though he also works for Mason as well when he first appeared. He is later upgraded with the ability to stretch his limbs at the same time Farrah was upgraded. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four 2. Destroyed after an overdose of bio killer energy from Silva and receiving the bio electron charge attack while trying to shield Farrah. English version is: Plasmanoid
  • Beast King (ジュウオウ, Jūō) - He is a gorilla-like monster. Rather clumsy and scatter-brained, he is often there for comic relief and generally works along Monster. He is seen in episode 13 rescuing Monster after Messer Beast was defeated in battle. He survived the first attack and later fell down with parts still intact for reassembly. He was rebuilt for his loyalty at the request of his master with chest cannons. He works as the acting leader in the movie. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four. Destroyed after receiving heavy damage from Silva and the Biomen. English version is: Zeroid
  • Aquaiger (アクアイガー, Akuaigā) - He is a water monster who uses a spear-gun and is armed with Bubble Bombs and Acid Spray. Works with Farrah and Mason most of the time, though he worked with Monster during the camera mission. He is probably the weakest of the group, and occasionally gets picked upon by the others for his incompetence which is seen in episode 14, where Monster kicked him down the ladder and was given a beatdown by the other beastnoids. Destroyed in episode 31 presumably with no spare parts. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Yellow Four 1, Yellow 4 2 and Pink Five. English version is: Aquanoid
  • Messer Beast (メッサージュウ, Messājū) - He is a gargoyle-like monster with the ability to fly and armed with supersonic waves and laser energy beams. Works with Farrah and Mason most of the time(with farrah in episode 9 and mason in episode 1), although at one point worked with Monster in episode 13. Destroyed in episode 31 presumably with no spare parts. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four 2. English version is: Falconoid

Others

  • Peebo (ピーボ, Pībo) - Peebo is the guardian of the Bio Particles, Bio Robo and Bio Dragon. She was built as an experimental robot when the Bio Particles were in development. She came to earth 500 years ago and showered five courageous people with the Bio Particles. Now that Gear has made its move, it is time for Peebo to summon descendants of the original five. She shows a great fear for Silva. In the last two episodes, she used herself to energize bio robo.
  • Bio Hunter Silva (バイオハンター・シルバ, Baio Hantā Shiruba) - A robot from Bio Star programmed to kill anything with the Bio Particles. He was given half of the Bio Particles. He can also fire arrows from his elbow. He became maniacal and with his mecha, Balzion (バルジオン, Barujion), helped destroy Bio Star. He armed himself with the bio killer particles (which killed Yellow Four I), but his shots were not able to kill any of the Biomen probably due to their upgrade, and used them to power up his robot as well. He is enemies with both Biomen and Gear. He killed Mason using the arrows that he fires from his elbows. He was killed when Balzion was defeated by a sudden charge of Bio Energy from the Bio Robo. English version name is Silver and his mecha is Bio Destroyer.
  • Shinichi Kageyama (蔭山秀一, Kageyama Shinichi) - Thinking himself an orphan, in reality he is the son of Doctor Man from whom the Black Prince is based from (actor Hidenori Iura plays both Prince and Shinichi roles). At first, Doctor Man tries to get him to join Gear, but Shinichi rejects Doctor Man. Eventually, Shinichi finds and joins Doctor Shibata (43-44). Later, he helps the Bioman ultimately defeat Gear. He manages to convince Doctor Man to help them stop the bomb that could destroy the whole Earth through the use of human emotions. English version name is Sonny.
  • Professor Shibata (柴田博士, Shibata-hakase) - A brilliant cybernetics and robotics professor who develops a "conscience circuit" for Gear's Mecha Clones. Later revealed to have a dual identity. Shibata is revealed to be Shirou's biological father. In episode 49, He used a Mecha Clone to communicate with Shirou. He died to save the other Biomen in Episode 50.
  • Brain (Buren) - A super-computer artificial brain developed by Doctorman in episode 14, to control the Mecha-Gigan Anchor Kans ; proving too intelligent, Brain eventually disobeys Doctor Man's orders after being taunted by Red One, and leaves the Mecha Gigan's cockpit to face the Biomen by himself ; he is then wounded and chased down by Gear's henchmen, only to be rescued by Pink Five who tries to teach him about human emotions. Eventually understanding the concept of "friendship", Brain ends up sacrifying his own existence to allow the Bio Robo to defeat Anchor Kans. His last words before dying were for Pink Five and the friendship she had offered him.
  • Miki - a special Mecha Clone developed by Doctorman to be coupled with Satan Megas in episode 43-44, Miki had the unusual appearance of a young girl in school uniform. As long as she existed, Satan Megas was able to re-assemble himself indefinitely, making him virtually invincible. After being implanted with Professor Shibata's conscience circuit, however, Miki felt guilt for the ravages caused by Gear, and resorted to self-destruct so the Bio Robo could defeat Satan Megas.

Mecha

  • Bio Dragon (バイオドラゴン, Baio Doragon) - A carrier ship for Bio Jets One and Two. On the fuselage side, two laser guns are equipped. With its magnetic force crane, it can pick up an inert Bio Robo. It can even transport a fully-formed Bio Robo to the scene of battle.
  • Bio Robo (バイオロボ, Baio Robo) - Coming from the Bio Star 500 years ago, it is the Bio Robo that showers five youths with Bio-particles. It is the Bio Robo that also gathers our five protagonists together, literally picking them up like action figures. It is also semi-sentient, showing fear at the arrival of Silva. It is formed from the two Bio Jets when the command "Fusion! Hyper Cross!" (合体!ハイパークロス!, Gattai! Haipā Kurosu!) is given. It is armed with the Super-Maser (スーパーメーザー, Sūpā Mēzā) sword and it destroys monsters with a variety of finishing attacks including, but not limited to, Concentration (コンセントレーション, Konsentorēshon), Comet Cutter (コメットカッター, Kometto Kattā), Chainsaw Cutter (チェーンソーカッター, Chēnsō Kattā), Straight Flush (ストレートフラッシュ, Sutorēto Furasshu), Pinball Sting (ピンボールスティング, Pinbōru Sutingu), and Dashing Beam (ダッシングビーム, Dasshingu Bīmu). It uses a powered up attack, the Bio Particle Cut (バイオ粒子斬り, Baio Ryūshi Kiri) against later monsters. At the end of episode 10, its eyes glowed activating the now dead yellow 4 1's computer system in her helmet which caused it to activate her super electronic holography flashing a footage of her (which was actually her shot at the end credits)
    • Bio Jet One (バイオジェット1号, Baio Jetto Ichigō) - It is used by Red One and Pink Five. It forms the upper half of the Bio Robo. It appeared in Gaoranger Vs Super Sentai
    • Bio Jet Two (バイオジェット2号, Baio Jetto Nigō) - It is used by three other Biomen. It forms the lower half of the Bio Robo.
