Walkringen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Geography
Walkringen has an area of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, 56.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 36.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6.3% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.5%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]
Demographics
Walkringen has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 1,825, of which 3.1% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -2.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (97.1%), with Albanian being second most common ( 0.5%) and Serbo-Croatian being third ( 0.5%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 50.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (15.9%), the Green Party (11.9%) and the FDP (8.1%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 57.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.6%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Walkringen about 70.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Walkringen has an unemployment rate of 0.78%. As of 2005[update], there were 211 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 74 businesses involved in this sector. 191 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 34 businesses in this sector. 476 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 48 businesses in this sector.[3]
