The Prix Perth is a Group 3 flat horse race in France which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Saint-Cloud over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November.

History

The event was established in 1901, and it was originally contested over 2,200 metres. It was named in honour of Perth, a racehorse whose successful career had concluded the previous year. The race was initially held at Maisons-Laffitte, and it was then transferred to Saint-Cloud. It was extended to 2,400 metres in 1906, and to 2,500 metres in 1908.

The Prix Perth was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1918. The first post-war race was run over 2,400 metres at Saint-Cloud, and the second over 2,500 metres at Maisons-Laffitte. It began a period over 2,500 metres at Saint-Cloud in 1921.

The race was cancelled twice during World War II, in 1939 and 1940. Its regular venue was closed during this period, so it was switched temporarily to Longchamp (1941–42, 1945), Maisons-Laffitte (1943) and Le Tremblay (1944). Throughout this time its distance was 3,000 metres, and this was reverted to 2,500 metres in 1946.

The present version of the Prix Perth began in 1949, when it was cut to 1,600 metres. With the exception of one edition at Longchamp in 1954, this version has continually taken place at Saint-Cloud. When the present grading system was introduced in 1971, the race was classed at Group 3 level. It was contested over 1,550 metres in 1978, but it returned to 1,600 metres the following year.
