Obbink has been established by a revolutionary and exemplary edition of the writing of philosophers Philodem About piety as one of the leading Papyrologen in the area of Greek language and is one of the employees of Philodemus Project. In the edition he has mostly charred and therefore extremely difficult to decipher and to be reconstructed papyrus scrolls from Herculaneum merged into a convincing whole. At Oxford, he is working on the Oxyrhynchus Papyri. Since 1999 he is one to decipher papyri from the multi-spectral imaging (MSI) technology. From the work on the Philodem papyri he devoted more work out of Hellenistic philosophy. Obbink is working on other papyri such as the Derveni papyrus and those from the fields of ancient magic and astrology. Lastly Obbink has written a critical text edition of the astrological poem submitted to the Anubion.
