Osmania University (also known as OU in short) is a public university situated in the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is one of the oldest modern universities in India. It is the first Indian University to have an Indian language as medium of instruction (Urdu). It is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 300,000 students on its various campuses and affiliated colleges. It is particularly well known for its Engineering and Technology departments. Its faculty of management is considered as one of the best management institutions under the university system. Osmania Medical College was once part of the same university system. It is now transferred under the supervision of NTR Health University, AP, India.

History

Founded in 1918 by the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad state, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, Osmania University is the seventh oldest institution of higher learning in India, the third oldest in southern India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely State of Hyderabad [1] . For almost nine decades, it has sustained an integrated development of all faculties. It has contributed to the academic, social, and economic development of the region and the nation as a whole.

Education, research and admissions

Osmania university is a non-profit university, which is funded and managed by the government. Admissions into bachelor of engineering, masters and doctoral programs of this university is purely on a merit basis, evaluated by national entrance examinations for each of the courses offered. The research activities are funded by various agencies like UGC (University Grants Commission) or by CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) which are autonomous agencies of government of India. Osmania University, founded by the Nizam in 1918, is the seventh oldest in India.

Campus

Osmania has a campus of nearly 1600 acres (6 km²). Osmania University is perhaps the largest higher education system in the country [citation needed]. The university attracts students from all across the nation as well as from various other countries. It is the home to nearly 300,000 students pursuing their higher studies in its campus, constituent affiliated colleges and district centres. Its faculty and staff number nearly 5,000.

Osmania offers courses in Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Technology, Commerce and Business Management, Information Technology and Oriental Languages.

In the year 2001, Osmania University had the distinction of being awarded the five-star status by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission, part of the Government of India [citation needed].

College of Arts and Sciences

College of Science

(Established in 1918), the University College of Science has a strong tradition of research in both basic and applied sciences. Even though the college itself was established in 1918, the work carried out in Astronomy at the Nizamia Observatory dates back to 1908. From 1906 to 1946, the observatory was a part of the great International Programme 'Carte-du-Ciel' which prepared an extensive Astrographic star catalogue from accurate measurements of the coordinates of stars.

Today, with a separate building for each department, the University College of Science offers Postgraduate (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. degrees in 13 teaching departments.

Consultancy is undertaken by various faculty members of the University College of Science which secures grants from various governmental agencies such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Department of Science & Technology (DST). Besides a regular student strength of 1000, there are over 1500 research scholars working for the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The college has nearly 200 teaching staff and 388 technical and supporting non-teaching staff. dr.ahmed shahnawaz was one of the best teachers and also the dean of the medical college he was origanally from sialkot which is now in the pakistan side of punjab. he had done his MRCP and FRCS from England in the 1920's he came to hyderabad as the royal physician of the Nizam of hyderabad he later became a teacher and then the dean of the college.he was a very loved and respected teacher among his students. even now long after his death his students who are well known doctors all over the world have his picture framed and hanged in their cabin's. some even stand before his picture if they are faced by a complicated case and they believe they find the right solution for the comlication.

College of Law

Justice P.Jagan Mohan Reddy, the then Dean, Faculty of Law took active interest in establishing the institution. The University College of Law was inaugurated in 1960 by the then Chief Justice of India Sri B.P.Sinha. Prof.G.C.V.Subba Rao was the first Principal of the College. The LL.M.Courses were shifted to the University College of Law in the same year. Four branches of LL.M. i.e., Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law and international Law, Personal law and Mercantile Law were offered by the College. Subsequently some of the branches of LL.M. were shifted to Evening College of Law. IN 1977 all the LL.M. courses were shifted to the Evening College of Law. Again in 1994, three branches viz. Constitutional, Mercantile Law and Labour Law in LL.M. Course have been reintroduced in the University College of Law, O.U. At present, the sanctioned strength in LL.B. is 160 seats. The Faculty of Law introduced the Ph.D. Programme and first batch of Ph.D. students was registered in the year 1978. The Ph.D. Programme is offered on regular and part-time basis.

The college has produced many luminaries in different fields. There have been several Judges of the Supreme Court and various High Courts, Chief Ministers and Ministers, Civil Servants, Governors, Speakers and Ambassadors and leading Lawyers among the alumni of this institution. They include Justice P.Jaganmohan Reddy, Justice Shah Mohammed Quadri, Justice B.P.Jeevan Reddy, Justice Sardar Ali Khan, Justice Y.Bhaskar Rao, Justice B.Subhashan Reddy, Justice B.Sudarshan Reddy, Justice G.Bikshapathi, Justice L.Narasimha Reddy, R.Vasudeava Pillai, P.C.Rao, B.C.Jain, S.B.Chavan, Virendra Patil, Shiv Raj Patil, Shivaji Rao Patil Nilangekar, V.S.Rama Devi, Sripada Rao, Ch.Vidyasagar Rao and Dharam Singh. This list is only illustrative in nature. This college has the distinction of being rated as one of the top ten law colleges in the entire country for two successive years viz., in 2000 and 2001 by India Today Magazine.

College of Commerce and Business Management

Department of Commerce

The Department came into existence as an independent wing of Osmania University with the launching of B.Com. Degree in 1945. The Department has been making intensive efforts to improve its profile, by serving the community on different fronts, in the form of imparting education through various courses, undertaking projects financed by the U.G.C., State Government, Industrial establishments, etc. and encouraging intensive research on topics of contemporary relevance. The services of the Department are being provided not only to Andhra Pradesh in the form of formal system of education, but also to the entire country in the form of distance and open learning.

The Department of Commerce played a major role in setting up the Institute of Public Enterprise, which has grown into a premier Research and Consultancy Institute working in the area of Public Enterprise. To meet the needs of academics, industry, society etc., the Department has been offering various courses and conducting Research in various fields and offering solutions to the contemporary problems of Indian economic and commerce environment.

Department of Business Management

Nestled in the sprawling, sylvan campus of Osmania University, the Department of Business Management has been conducting a two-year postgraduate programme in Business Management since 1964. It was established as an independent entity in 1971.

Recognising that ‘change’ is the ‘mantra’ of today’s corporate world and the department being autonomous in its functioning and curriculum planning, it keeps updating itself to adapt to the ever-changing demands of today’s corporate world.

The department trains 80 students every year with the best of faculty and facilities. The faculty comprises of intellectually stimulated academicians having a vast experience that enables them to impart practical knowledge. They are in touch with the practicalities and intricacies of business and are constantly striving to transform the students into successful and progressive leaders of the future.

The department takes pride in providing its students with the best of facilities like, an excellent library, state-of-the-art computer laboratory and a well-equipped auditorium.

The Department of Business Management, Osmania University has been offering an MBA program since 1964. This program has been consistently ranked as one of the best MBA programs in India [citation needed]. Only 80 students from over 2,00,000 applicants make it into this MBA program through a competitive exam. Besides M.B.A it offers Ph.D in management also.It has tie up with various institutions like college of defence management to offer MMS for senior military officers,Deccan school of hospital management and Apollo institute of Hospital administration to offer MHM.It offers MPM in association with Sarder Vallabhai Patel institute of police administration.jk

College of Engineering and Technology

The University College of Engineering (UCE) has the distinction of being the oldest and the biggest among the Engineering Colleges of the State of Andhra Pradesh. Established in the year 1929, eleven years after the formation of Osmania University, it was the 6th Engineering College to be established in the whole of British India. The College moved to its present permanent building in the year 1947. Today it is the biggest among the campus colleges of Osmania University. The Golden Jubilee of the College was celebrated in 1979, the Diamond Jubilee in 1989 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2004. The College was made autonomous in 1994.

The College offers four-year engineering degree courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The College also offers courses leading to Master of Computer Applications, Master of Science by Research and also Ph.D., in the various branches of Engineering. Part-time courses are offered both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As of today, there is a yearly intake of 320 undergraduate students (full-time) and 140 (part-time) students and 290 postgraduate students (full-time and part-time). There are 109 teaching staff members, including 24 professors.

College of Technology

The University College of Technology is one of the premier and the oldest colleges offering Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology education in the country. It is a constituent college under the Faculty of Technology, Osmania University. The College of Technology had a modest beginning in 1943 as a post-graduate section of Applied Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Osmania University. Later in 1945, it was upgraded to the Department of Applied Chemistry. In 1951, the subject of Chemical Engineering was introduced and the Department was redesignated as the Department of Chemical Technology. In 1954, four year degree courses were introduced leading to the Bachelors' degrees in Chemical Technology and Chemical Engineering. In September 1969, the University upgraded the Department of Chemical Technology into the University College of Technology to form a strong academic nucleus of Chemical Engineering/Chemical Technology and also to serve as a nodal point for disseminating the technical know how to various research institutions and industries. The College is known for its excellence in teaching and training the students in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology at the under-graduate and post-graduate levels. Over the years, the College has expanded and grown by leaps and bounds and the alumni of this college have excelled themselves all over the world.

In order to meet the changing requirements of the country, the BTech degree courses in Food Processing and Preservation Technology and Textile Technology were started in the College during 1994-95. The importance of these courses is self evident as there are rich resources in cereals, fruits and vegetables, cotton, silk and other fibres. Further, no other University or College in Andhra Pradesh is offering full-fledged four year BTech degree program in these technologies to exploit the available resources.

College of Physical Education

The University College of Physical Education, Osmania University was established in year 1993. Initially it was named PG College of Physical Education. The College started with the sole aim of imparting instructions in Physical Education leading to the award of “Master’s Degree in Physical Education” (M.P.Ed.,).

During the initial years i.e. from 1993-1994 the college was housed in the second floor of Post Graduate College of Law (Evening) situated in the premises of Nizam College. In the year 1995, the college was shifted to the old Principal’s Lodge, a separate building in Nizam College premises. The College was offering M.P.Ed., summer and M.P.Ed. Regular Courses. During the year 2001, the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.C. Reddy was kind enough to allot the Nizamia Observatory building situated near ASRC at the campus exclusively for the University College of Physical Education. The College was shifted to the present premises and started functioning from Feb. 2001.

With the changes in the core programme of Physical Education, NCTE has made it compulsory to have two years M.P.Ed. course. Hence the One year M.P.Ed. course was discontinued from 2002. The M.P.Ed. two years course programme commenced from the academic year 2004-2005 after the approval of NCTE, Bangalore with an intake of 32 students each year with the semester system.
