Waterbury is a city located in New Haven County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 107,271. It is the fifth-largest city in Connecticut. .
Waterbury is home to Teikyo Post University.
Waterbury's nickname is Brass City. It is on Interstate 84 and is the hometown of Connecticut Governor John Rowland. The city has a Metro North railroad station.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 74.9 km² (28.9 mi²). 74.0 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.21% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 107,271 people, 42,622 households, and 26,894 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,449.7/km² (3,754.7/mi²). There are 46,827 housing units at an average density of 632.8 persons/km² (1,639.0 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.14% White, 16.31% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 10.91% from other races, and 3.66% from two or more races. 21.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 42,622 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.9% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.11.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.
