Adventure Time with Finn & Jake is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward, based on the animated short Adventure Time that aired as part of Frederator Studios' Random! Cartoons. The series focuses on the surreal adventures undertaken by two best friends: Finn (a 12-year old boy) and Jake (a wise 28-year-old dog with magical powers) that dwell in the Land of Ooo. Half-episode "sneak peeks" aired on March 11 and 18, 2010, and the series officially premiered on April 5.

The animated short was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject of 2006.[1] In September 2008, the short was officially greenlighted for a series by Cartoon Network.[2][3][4]

Plot

Adventure Time with Finn and Jake follows two best friends: Finn (a 12-year old boy) and Jake (a strange 28-year-old dog with magical powers), and the surreal adventures undertaken by the duo as they traverse the mystical Land of Ooo. A world built for adventure, Ooo is filled to the brim with various landscapes for the two buddies to explore and bizarre characters to assist.

Characters

Major Characters

  • Finn (voiced by Zack Shada in short, Jeremy Shada in series) is a human boy who wants to become a great hero some day. He harbors a crush on Princess Bubblegum, although he tries to hide it. He enjoys defeating evil forces and is skilled at combat. Wearing a self-proclaimed 'awesome' hat and prone to strange exclamations and outbursts, he has a lust for adventure and will help anyone in need. He is also known to be horrible at math. As a tribute to Penn Ward's original character - Finn's hat is that of Bruno Bear.

The main characters in Adventure Time. From left to right: Princess Bubblegum, Lady Rainicorn, Jake, Finn, The Ice King.
  • Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio) is a wise, shape-shifting dog and Finn's best friend who inexplicably gained magical powers when he was a pup. Acting at times as a moral compass to his energetic pal, Jake has a laid-back attitude to most situations and often prefers just lazing around to adventuring. He is also Lady Rainicorn's boyfriend. He also enjoys eating lots of jelly doughnuts.
  • Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Paige Moss in short, Hynden Walch in series), is a hybrid of bubblegum and human DNA and the ruler of the Candy Kingdom, who is incredibly smart and has a huge interest in science. She may have a crush on Finn.
  • Lady Rainicorn (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker in short, Niki Yang in series) is Princess Bubblegum's loyal, majestic, unicorn-like pet, that speaks a different language every time she talks. Many people have recognized various languages such as Korea, Japanese, French, etc. Perhaps because she is a rainbow, she symbolizes her vast collection of languages.
  • Ice King (voiced by John Kassir in short, Tom Kenny in series) is the old, friendless ruler of the Ice Kingdom, who is obsessed with capturing princesses in hopes that one of them may want to become his wife. His magic powers (primarily freezing things and hurling 'frozen lightning bolts') stem solely from the magical crown which rests on his head. He is shown losing his heart who becomes his own character. He also will have a journey into his own subconscious with a great owl.
  • Marceline the Vampire Queen (voiced by Olivia Olson) is the fearless queen of all vampires, who has a friendly rivalry with Princess Bubblegum. She has wandered the Land of Ooo for centuries. She is a daredevil, musical genius, very seductive, and despite her careless but also fairly harmless merry-making, she is incredibly dangerous when provoked with powers of turning into a giant bat with incredible strength. The show has hinted that she may have a crush on Finn. She may be a vampire, but she only enjoys sucking out "shades of red" from various things such as fruits and jelly doughnuts.
  • Lumpy Space Princess (also known as L.S.P.) (voiced by Pendleton Ward) is a floating, cloud-like princess, who is the ruler of the Lumpy Space dimension. Even though her voice may not sound like a woman, she is still a female. Her species of Lumpy Space People apparently share a "werewolf-like" curse for biting. Where as the antidote for the "lumps" is to sit on a smooth sphere before sunset. Lumpy Space people in general, are known to be grumpy and rude using the word "Lump" in replacement of vulgar phrases and comments.

Minor Characters

  • Guardians of the Royal Promise - Giant Statues that rest upon each side of the Candy Kingdom (seen in backgrounds with two gum-ball shaped heads blowing bubbles). These monolithic statues become alive when someone breaks a "Royal Promise" by which a trial is set in order. If a person is able to accomplish the trial successfully, they are pardoned from breaking a royal promise.
  • ChocoBerry - She is a piece of candy who lives in the Candy Kingdom. She is a strawberry with some choclate on the top. She speaks in a French accent. It is hinted she might like Mr.Cupcake.
  • Mr. Cupcake - He is a cupcake who lives in the Candy Kingdom. He has a mustache and vanilla frosting with sprinkles. Under Mr. Cupcake's wrapper is choclate (an inside joke for his ethnicity) which no one knew until the Candy People played Truth or Dare. He might be one of Finn and Jake's best candy friends because he is always seen at their parties. He appears to be very strong but might not since in Slumber Party Panic he couldn't kill a candy zombie in one hit unlike everyone else.
  • Treetrunks - She is Finn and Jakes elephant friend who, unlike many others, has an episode named after her. She looks old and wrinkled and possess a female western accent. Treetrunks is obsessed with apples and in her self-titled episode she wishes to eat the greatest one in Ooo, the Crystal Gem Apple, although after biting it she popped. She uses her cuteness to complete tasks by seducing her subjects while wearing a lot of make up. She constantly places her self in danger due to her naivety.
  • Manfried the talking piñata hangs in the main entrance to the Bubblegum Castle. Manfried's voice is reconizable because of it's plainess and lack of emotion, although it still shows his good heart.
  • Ricardio (voiced by George Takei) The Romantic Heart Guy. Seen leaping out of the Ice King's chest, he apparently takes on a life of his own and charms all the princesses at a party

The animated short Adventure Time aired as part of Frederator Studios' Random! Cartoons, and led to the creation of the animated series.

Plot

The cartoon begins with Finn (called Pen originally) sleeping under a tree and Jake meditating. After they do a little dance (which Jake downloaded from the internet while meditating), Princess Bubblegum's Rainicorn (a unicorn/rainbow hybrid) flies by in tears. They discover that the Rainicorn is so sad because the princess is being imprisoned by the Ice King. Using snowballs, they battle their way past the Iceclops, Snow Golem, and other monsters that inhabit the Ice Kingdom.

Eventually, Finn and Jake reach the Ice King's mountain lair. Finn and the Ice King fight while Jake remains outside flirting with the Rainicorn, ignoring the battle. Just when Finn seems to be gaining the upper hand, the Ice King uses his "frozen lightning bolts" to freeze Finn in a block of ice. For unexplained reasons, this transports Finn's mind "back in time, and to Mars" where he has a short motivational conversation with Abraham Lincoln. After being told to believe in himself, Finn is returned to the present: just in time to see the Ice King fly away with Princess Bubblegum. Chasing after him using Jake's extendable legs, Finn rescues the princess from the Ice King's grasp. Jake pushes the magical crown off of the Ice King's head, thereby removing the King's source of power. The Ice King then plummets off screen, yelling a long list of complex threats of things he will do when he returns.

The story closes with the princess giving Finn a kiss, which embarrasses Finn greatly. He attempts to leave, but Jake claims that they have nowhere else to go and that there are no adventures that need them. Fortuitously, some nearby ninjas are stealing an old man's diamonds, and they both run off in pursuit.
