Auchmar

Auchmar is an historic site and one-time Estate of Isaac Buchanan, who founded both the Hamilton and Toronto Board of Trades.

Auchmar, the fabled estate of the Honourable Isaac Buchanan, one of Hamilton's most influential citizens, was built between 1852 and 1854 on a private estate on 86 acres (350,000 m2) on the Hamilton mountain that he called Clairmont Park. Located at what is now the corner of Fennell Avenue and West 5th, the manor house, and its intact outbuildings, and stone wall-surrounded orchard sit on 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land that include the original landscaped grounds. Auchmar is a unique, heritage asset owned by the citizens of Hamilton. Auchmar is recognized by the Ontario Heritage Trust as having significant historical value.[1] Isaac Buchanan, was an international merchant, first president of the Hamilton Club, founder of Hamilton and Toronto boards of trade - forerunners to modern chambers of commerce - and founder of the regiment that would later become the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry.[2]

In 1999 by a generous conveyance to the City of Hamilton by Ellen Helden and Lou Ferro Auchmar was spared demolition. Neither the City nor Mayor Wade ever acknowledged the role Ferro-Helden played in saving Auchmar. When no one else cared about the estate Ferro-Helden spent over $300,000.00 on the site to preserve and improve it - they are the unsung heroes of Auchmar - but they eventually gave up to the negative forces that opposed their plans to convert Auchmar into a national heritage site - The City failed to live up to its financial agreement and Ferro-Helden abandoned their plans. Auchmar now lays empty and in decay - the victim of dark forces that occupy those who now drive its future. Ferro-Helden were the last real people to occupy the fine old manor House and only Isaac and Agnes Buchanan's ghost lives there.
