History

Satanas or as it is also known, the almighty Ese Te Ese or STS, has been considered by many to be the oldest and original Filipino-American Los Angeles street gang. The group claims a long generational history, although much of its history cannot be traced due to the gang's clandestine operations, and lack of record-keeping. It has been traced by historians to have been began by a group of individuals of Filipino descent to initially, like the Latin Kings and Crips, serve as an organization of protection for Filipino youth during the late 1960s in the Pinoy barrios of the notorious Rampart district of west Los Angeles specifically near Belmont and Temple areas, and by the 1970s had risen to power through murder and heavy drug trafficking. Members show their allegence to the violent gang by tattooing the initials STS, or the words Ese Te Ese, Satanas or Satan on their bodies.

Filipino/Chicano connection

Due to the gang's location and historical connection/cultural similarities between the two peoples, Satanas was noted in its early years for allying with many of its Chicano/Mexican gang counterparts within their surrounding neighborhoods, with many of Ese Te Ese's older members and leaders or veteranos being fluent in Spanish or Caló. Numerous accounts of Los Angeles gang history have often placed both Pinoys and Chicanos side by side one another during various street wars. The alliance between the two brown peoples however, changed drastically mainly in part due to the rising Asian/Latino conflict that led to the deadly gang warfare that erupted between Asians and Hispanics in Long Beach in the 1980s.

Ese Te Ese's influence

Many Filipino gangs in some way claim roots to Satanas, gangs such as Demonios and Diablos originated amongst second generation STS members and younger siblings of individuals who were members of STS; and indeed, the founders of many other Filipino-American gangs were originally members of Satanas who had somehow either had a falling out with the group, or had the blessings to create a new chapter, or clika under the protection of Satanas. Ironically, many of these clikas, such as Pinoy Real, Sarzana (Gang), and Hellside Gang eventually became enemies of STS in subsequent generations. Rivals of Satanas include gangs of other races such as 18th Street gang, Mara Salvatrucha 13, Avenidas, Lemonwood and La Colonia Chiques as well as some of the other noted Filipino and Asian Gangs.

Demographics

Originally, potential gang members were to be of Pinoy ancestry. Although most of Satanas' members are of Filipino descent, the gang has over the years included members of other races such as Mexican and Central-Americans, African-Americans, Samoans as well as other Asians. Case in point with Satanas-Cerritos who have been allowing members of Indian ancestry into their ranks who seek protection from the more established Mexican gangs in the area.

Expansion

Traditionally based in Los Angeles, the gang has since established chapters throughout the United States in southern and northern California, Washington, and also in other countries such as Canada as well as in the Philippine Islands.
