In the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Doctor Eggman (or Dr. Robotnik in the early western version) created many robots entitled his E-Series. The name gained prominence after the release of the video game Sonic Adventure, replacing the term badnik which had been used to describe Eggman's robots previously in most continuities. Presumably, the "E" stands for "Eggman", though this is not known for certain.
Sonic Adventure Robots
The first use of the term E-models was in Sonic Adventure. Although most often connected with the E-100 Series of gunner robots that were prominent in that game (see below), other minor robots were also considered E-models. They are listed here.
- E-01 Baby Kiki
- E-02 Rhino-Tank
- E-03 Sweeper
- E-04 Leon
- E-05 Boa-Boa
- E-06 Bladed Spinner
- E-07 Ice Bot
- E-08 Kart Kiki
- E-09 Buyoon
- E-10 Cop Speeder
- E-15 Spiky Spinner
- E-16 Electro Spinner
- E-17 Ghora
- E-19 Egg Keeper
- E-22 Beat
- E-24 Jetso
- E-25 Duo Jet
- E-26 Bomb Jet
- E-27 Hyper Jet
- E-28 Mecha Fish
- E-29 Egg Pirate
E-100 Series
Unlike many of Eggman's robots, in Sonic Adventure or previous games, the E-100 series were important characters in their own right. They were gunner robots, still in the developmental stages. The most prominent was E-102 Gamma, who was a playable character during the game.
E-100 Alpha "Zero"
- Main article: E-100 Zero
E-100 Alpha is a large green robot that resembles a trashcan and chases Amy Rose around in her story. He has a targeting laser and will able to dodge you after getting hit many times.
He was eventually destroyed by Amy. It was quite unique that he did not have an animal inside him.
Note: Sega does not say that Zero is a E-series robot. In the game, he is refered to as just 'Zero'. He could, however, be considered by Eggman as an unmentionable prototype to the E-100's.
Zero makes a cameo in Sonic Advance 2 as a mobile obstacle in Special Stages.
E-101 Beta
E-101 Beta is a black robot that was created for the E-100 army. He has two homing missile-launchers for arms. Eggman defined Beta as Gamma's "older brother", and decided to pit Beta and Gamma against each other to determine which robot would leave the Mystic Ruins base to board the Egg Carrier. Gamma managed to defeat Beta, and Beta was relegated to the storage area to be used as "spare parts".
Unhappy with his incompetent design, Eggman sent him to get remodeled into the sleek Beta mkII, which has one eye, huge claws, and hovers constantly. Its improved capabilities include the ability to shield itself, fire a spread of four homing missiles, and conjure rainbow-colored balls of energy, which can be thrown from great distances. E-101 mkII was Gamma's final boss. The parts left over from the remodeling were used as spare parts for other E-series robots.
E-102 Gamma
E-102 Gamma is a red cyborg with a machine gun arm and a laser targeting device used for aiming. Oddly, E-102 is the only robot of the E-100 series that did not begin life with a jet pack, though E-102 later picked one up in the Egg Carrier. Gamma was placed in Eggman's E-100 army after proving himself in a fight against his older brother Beta, and he excelled, more so than any of the other soldiers. He had a change of heart after meeting Amy, and decided to free the animals held captive within the remaining robots (this was shortly after being defeated by Sonic and Tails aboard the Egg Carrier *Though in his own storyline, E-102 nearly defeated Sonic*). Gamma was responsible for terminating E-101, E-103, E-104, and E-105 during the latter half of its life. In the process of freeing the Flicky that powered E-101 Beta, Gamma exploded, thus releasing the Flicky within him. These two Flickies just so happened to be the parents of the little bird Amy had been protecting up to that point, thus ending both Amy and Gamma's storylines.
E-102, a playable character in Sonic Adventure, made a cameo in Sonic Adventure 2 as a gunner robot in Rouge's Egg Quarters stage, and is a playable character in Sonic Battle (however, it turns out to just be parts from Gamma after he was destroyed that resemble him. He is really E-102 "γ" Chaos Gamma, notifiable from the fact he has two hands and neither one is a gun). The unlikely hero has yet to make a return appearance in the Sonic series.
This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. |
E-102r Chaos Gamma
E-102r Chaos Gamma is the rebuilt version of Gamma that appears in Sonic Battle. He looks just like Gamma, except he has two arms rather than an arm and a gun. He has various weapons hidden in his chest that the original didn't, including two drills, a tazer/knife type weapon and grenade launcher, most of which he attaches to his hand (the grenade launcer is an exception, being attached to his shoulder instead). He originally fights on Eggman's side, attempting to capture Emerl alongside the Phis, but after being bested twice, he turns good and allows Emerl to train with him in the last story. He is a playable character in challenge and battle modes after you defeat him in sonic's story.
E-103 Delta
E-103 Delta is a blue robot with two cannons for arms. When Delta was sent away along with Epsilon and Zeta, he looked sadly at his brother, E-102 Gamma. Later, Gamma found Delta stranded in Windy Valley. The two brothers battled, and Gamma emerged victorious. Delta fell over and exploded. In the original Sonic Adventure, Delta's animal was a green flicky bird, but in Sonic Adventure DX, the animal was changed to a parrot.
E-104 Epsilon
E-104 Epsilon is an orange robot with two large cannon arms. Epsilon was teleported to an unknown location along with Delta and Zeta. Later, Gamma found E-104 Epsilon in a lava filled cave (a.k.a. the Red Hot Skull area) in Red Mountain. The two fought, but again, Gamma succeeded by shooting him down. The yellow flicky inside Epsilon managed to escape as his body melted away into the lava.
E-105 Zeta
E-105 Zeta is a purple robot with two cannon arms. Zeta was later upgraded into a tank built into the core of the Egg Carrier, with seven laser guns built in it. Gamma fought Zeta in the Hot Shelter onboard the Egg Carrier. Gamma then defeated Zeta and released the animal inside him. You can see a Dreamcast console as part of Zeta's design, put in by Sonic Team as an Easter Egg. This is in both the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions.
In Sonic X, Beta replaced much of Zeta's role so much that in fact, Zeta only appears on the show in Episode 31, "Revenge of the Robot". This is where Gamma comes to the Hot Shelter to destroy him.
E-121 Phi
E-121 Phis are copies of the robot Emerl used by Eggman. There were 14 phis which each copied an ability of Sonic and friends. They all were powered by chaos emerald shards and because of this emerl destroyed them. There is a mistake in numbering the phis as, according to the Greek alphabet, they should be numbered E-120. Eggman must have made a mistake.
E-123 Omega
See below.
Sonic Adventure 2 Robots
Further E-series robots appeared in the game Sonic Adventure 2. Notably, the E-1000 was an upgrade of E-102 Gamma, though in this game it served as a normal badnik-style enemy and has two cannon arms instead of one machine gun arm and one normal arm.
- E-20 Kiki - a monkey robot that throws bombs.
- E-31 Gola - red sphere robots with flames floating around them.
- E-32 Unidus - black sphere bots with spiked balls floating around them. Looks similar to the Orbinaut Badniks of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in Launch Base Zone.
- E-1000-resemble E-102 Gamma with two cannon arms. They shoot like crazy and seem to lack any higher awareness, so Doctor Eggman probably removed all individuality from the final design.
Sonic Heroes Robots
Yet, more E-models appeared in the game Sonic Heroes, though by this time, Doctor Eggman had progressed to an E-1000 (and E-2000) series of robots, rendering all previous constructions obsolete. The only exception to this was E-123 Omega, who was an individualistic playable character, much like E-102 Gamma.
- E-1001 Egg Pawn - Orange Eggman-shaped robots that carry various weapons
- E-1002 Egg Flapper - multicolored flying robots with various weapons
- E-1003 Cameron - turtle bots with cannons
- E-1004 Klagen - jellyfish bots that grab your team members
- E-1005 Egg Knight - gold Egg Pawns that lead armies of enemies
- E-1006 Egg Hammer - giant silver robots with hammers
- E-1007 Heavy Egg Hammer - armored Egg Hammers
- E-1008 Falco - bird robots that look like the Egg Hawk
- E-1009 Egg Bishop - Egg Pawns that can heal other robots
- E-1010 Egg Magician - Egg Pawns that can steal rings
- E-1011 Casino Pawn - Egg Pawns Found in Zone 3
- E-1012 Rhino Liner - mini train cars reminisce of Rhino-Tank
- E-1013 Rook
- E-2000 - Red or yellow armored robots with laser guns
E-123 Omega
- Main article: E-123 Omega
The only playable robot in the game, E-123 Omega was the last robot of the E-100 series, deactivated when Eggman began work on his E-1000s. Reactivated by Rouge, he swears vengeance on Eggman for shutting him down.
Robots from other games
- E-121 Phi - E-121 Phi refers to any one of several gray clones of Emerl created by Dr. Eggman.
- E-122 Gemerl - Black upgrade of Emerl.
- Guard Robo - Gray versions of Gamma that are used as security robots.
- Shadow Androids - Realistic-looking robots designed to look and fight like the black hedgehog they're based on. First glimpsed at in Sonic Heroes. Some of them must be destroyed in Shadow the Hedgehog to proceed through the level. In some cutscences of this game, Eggman tricks Shadow into thinking he's an Android!
Sonic X Robots
Several robots, supposedly from the E-Series, appeared in the television series Sonic X. However, since Sonic X occurs in a slightly different continuity from the games, they cannot necessarily be considered canon. They are as follows:
- E-11 Beacon - Sonic X Episodes 4 & 12. Beacon is a purple bird robot, which Eggman first activated to help him retrieve a Chaos Emerald, but it is destroyed by Sonic. Eggman later activates a second Beacon model to help ward off an attack by G.U.N.'s air force.
- E-12 Dreamer - Sonic X Episode 28
- E-13 Guardbot - Sonic X Episode 1
- E-14 Sneezer - Sonic X Episode 1
- E-18 Guerra-Hard - Sonic X Episode 13. A super powered combat robot, Guerra-Hard is powered by two Chaos Emeralds. Sonic is forced to battle the robot when he breaks into Eggman's base. Luckily, he is able to defeat it and capture the Chaos Emeralds inside.
- E-21 Ballion - Sonic X Episode 10: Baseball Bots. A team of atheletic robots built for playing baseball. They challenge Sonic and co. to a game, the winner of which gets a Chaos Emerald. They are beaten, and destroyed.
- E-23 Missile Wrist - Sonic X Episode 3. Eggman unleashes it to cause havoc in Station Square, only for it to be destroyed by Sonic. Missile Wrist is equipped with missile-like grappling hooks attached to retractable cords in place of its hands.
- E-35 Funfun - Sonic X Episode 12
- E-38 Octoron - Sonic X Episode 9
- E-39 Quizon - Sonic X Episode 9
- E-40 Egg Fortress - Sonic X Episode 15
- E-42 Torole - Sonic X Episode 15
- E-43 Falcon - Sonic X Episode 15
- E-45 Sumo - Sonic X Episode 21. An extremely stupid robot, Eggman sends Sumo to stop Sonic from winning a race with Sam Speed. Too big and slow to catch Sonic, Sumo takes it out on himself, hitting himself in the face. Underestimating his own strength, Sumo is sent flying and crashes into Eggman's base.
- E-47 Pumpty - Sonic X Episode 5
- E-51 Intelligente - Sonic X Episode 6. Intelligente is a robot teacher designed to interact with kids, and Eggman intended for him to brainwash the children into liking him. However, Intelligente became loved himself, and did not want to serve Eggman. He was forced into it again, and the weaponless robot was destroyed by Sonic.
- E-57 Clurken - Sonic X Episode 16
- E-65 Gorru-Gaooh - Sonic X Episode 18
- E-66 Da-Dai-Oh - Sonic X Episode 22
- E-70 Noizi - Sonic X Episode 11. A robot equipped with super powerful sound wave generators, Noizi was set to guard Eggman's fortress. He nearly defeated Topaz and Rouge, but was bested when Rouge threw a bomb into its main speaker and set it off.
- E-74 Weazo - Sonic X Episode 23. A giant weasel-like robot equipped with a flamethrower, Weazo comes along to help Eggman retrieve the purple Chaos Emerald. However, despite its power, it is beaten by a tag-team effort from Sonic and Knuckles.
- E-77 Lucky - Sonic X Episode 25. Designed to be the ultimate lucky charm, Lucky's ridiculous and clumsy body is covered in good luck charm symbols. Lucky was dispatched to locate the seventh Chaos Emerald, but wasn't doing a good job because it kept falling over. Eventually, Lucky found it, and was going to give it to Sonic. Caught in a battle between Eggman and G.U.N., Lucky turned out to live up to his name, constantly dodging attacks that should have destroyed him. He also has the ability to fly. Lucky later appeared in a fighting tournament, and made it to the semi-finals because for certain reasons, its opponents never showed up or were forced to leave before fighting began. Unfortunately, its luck ran out when he had to face Emerel, as its victory dance burned out the remaining energy in his power cells and subsequently shut-down.
- E-88 Lightning Bird - Sonic X Episode 24
- E-90 Super Sweeper - Sonic X Episode 5. A giant spacecraft, Eggman dispatched it to suck up satellites to grind into robot parts. Equipped with powerful missiles and lasers, a powerful suction force, and the ability to fly higher and faster than Tails' Tornado, Sweeper was seemingly unbeatable. However, it was no match for the improved X Tornado, and was destroyed by Sonic.
- E-91 Lady Ninja - Sonic X Episode 17. A robot based off of a female ninja, E-91 was equipped with ninja stars, gliders, an electrocution net, a chain with a weight at the end that could either be small or turn into a wrecking ball, and an entire arsenal of different Ninjutsu techniques. The Lady Ninja was dispatched to retrieve the red Chaos Emerald, but ran into trouble in the form of Knuckles the Echidna and Rouge the Bat. Eventually, she had Knuckles on the ropes, but Knuckles' human friend Hawk dumped water over her. Taking advantage, Knuckles hit her with a super punch, destroying her.
- E-99 Eggsterminator/Egg Fort 2 - Sonic X Episode 26. The robot form of the Egg Fort 2, Eggsterminator was unleashed by Eggman when he was facing both Sonic and G.U.N.'s Beetle robots. Powered by six Chaos Emeralds, Eggsterminator could move faster and attack stronger than Sonic. Unfortunately, all the power sent him out of control, causing him to attack Sonic and co. without hesitation and glow an orange color. However, Eggsterminator was destroyed when Super Sonic, charged up with the energy of all seven Chaos Emeralds, rammed through it multiple times.
