WiMP (Wireless Music Player) is a norwegian proprietary music streaming service, similar to Spotify, that allows instant listening to specific tracks or albums, with virtually no buffering delay. Music can be browsed by artist, by album or by created playlists as well as by direct searches. The service is made by the norwegian company Aspiro in cooporation with Platekompaniet and Telenor[1]. Music in WiMP is streamed using the HE-AAC file format in a bitrate of 64 kbps or the AAC file format in a bitrate of 256 kbps if the high quality streaming option is selected.

Compared with Spotify

  • WiMP does not use peer-to-peer technology like Spotify does [2].
  • It has music by Pink Floyd, which Spotify doesn't. WiMP previously also had music by Metallica and Led Zeppelin, but these are now only available bought as MP3 downloads due to licensing restrictions.
  • WiMP is cross-platform, as it is also available on Linux, where Spotify doesn't have any official client
  • Spotify is available in more countries than WiMP is, as WiMP is only available in Norway at the moment.
  • WiMP is only a subscription service, since it doesn't offer any free ad-based version like Spotify does.

Cost and availability

Wimp is funded by paid subscriptions. The price is 99 NOK per month, but a 30-day free trial is available.

Last.fm integration

The application features Last.fm integration which allows the current track to be "scrobbled" without making use of the Last.fm software.

Users can also buy tracks from within WiMP, as 256 kbps drm-free MP3-downloads trough the Platekompaniet online music store.

Mobile devices

WiMP has developed an Android[3] client of the application, and is said to be working on a version for the iPhone OS [4].
