Hopkins Junior High School is a secondary school in Fremont, California, serving the seventh and eighth grades. It is one of five junior high schools in the city belonging to the Fremont Unified School District. Graduates from four local elementary schools attend Hopkins Junior High. Students leaving Hopkins move on to the Mission San Jose High School. Student may also move on to Irvington High School if they choose.[citation needed] The school had the highest API score for public junior high schools in California for the year of 2005, and the second highest in 2006. In 2007, Hopkins has the highest API in the State of California.[1].

Music Department

The Hopkins Music Department is one of the strongest in the state of California, with the school's concert and jazz bands receiving high ratings at festivals since 1985.[citation needed] The bands have received first place awards at the Music in the Parks festival in Anaheim, California nine times since 2000, including 1st place overall awards in 2009 by both the Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble in their respective categories. Hopkins has a new string orchestra program which has also received high ratings, with both the intermediate and advanced orchestras receiving superior ratings at the California Music Educators Association Orchestra Festival in May 2007 & 2008. The Advanced Orchestra received a rating of 99 out of 100 at this festival, in both years, the highest of any junior high or high school group performing each time. The Advanced Orchestra and Intermediate Orchestra also have consistently received 1st place and superior ratings at Music in the Parks Festivals, including a 1st place overall rating in Anaheim in 2009. Several adjudicators over the years have called the Hopkins Advanced Orchestra "the best middle school orchestra I've ever heard". In 2009, all of the Hopkins ensembles received superior ratings at CMEA Band/Orchestra/Jazz Festivals, with 5 groups (Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Intermediate Orchestra, and Advanced Orchestra) receiving the highest possible "Unanimous Superior" ratings. The Hopkins Jazz Ensemble also received "Unanimous Superior" at the Campana Jazz Festival at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton in 2009. On Thursday, March 11, 2010, the Hopkins Wind Ensemble performed at the CMEA State Conference in Sacramento. The Hopkins Music Department currently, in 2009-2010, consists of 3 concert bands, 2 string orchestras, 1 full orchestra, and 2 jazz ensembles, and serves approximately 365 students (7th & 8th grade). Mr. Gregory Conway is the Director of Instrumental Music at Hopkins, a position he has held since August 2005.[2].

As of the 2008-2009 school year, Dr. Paul Ricks is the head of the Hopkins Junior High Science Department. He coaches the Science Bowl (Department of Energy) teams as well. The Science Bowl team won second place in the Nationals in 2008 and first place nationally in 2009 (Raghu Dhara, Margaret Shen, Hairuo Guo, Audrey Huang, and Team Captain Adi Jung). The 2010 team (Rohan Mathuria, Lewis Chen, Hemang Jangle, Krishna Bharathala, and Team Captain Raghu Dhara) placed 3rd nationally in May.

The New York trip is organized by the drama department (Ms. Boteilho) and includes visits to famous landmarks and buildings such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and the Rockefeller Center and features a student performance at a New York theatre. The Washington D.C. trip allows eighth grade students to visit their congressmen, representatives, and notable landmarks such as the Vietnam Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Institution.
