It was founded by Presidential Decree 94/1988 as an off-campus faculty of the [[TEI of Patras]]. The first department of the faculty was the Electrical Engineering Department which started its operation in the spring semester of the academic year 1987-88. In 1989, a further Presidential Decree established the TEI of Kalamata as a separate institution, comprising two schools, further subdivided into departments:

** Department of Crop Production, opened in the spring semester of the academic year 1989-90, renamed in 2009 as the Department of Food Technology
** Department of Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture, opened in the fall semester of the academic year 1993-94, renamed in 2009 as the Department of Organic Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture
* School of Management and Economy
** Department of Health and Welfare Unit Management, opened in the spring semester of the academic year 1989-90
** Department of Local Government, opened in the fall semester of the academic year 1993-94


Two new departments were founded in 1999, one in each School:
The '''TEI of Kalamata''' is one of the 15 Technological Educational Institutes established in Greece. It is the most important and rapidly developing educational and research centre in this region of the Peloponnese.


The Presidential Decree 94/1988 stipulated the beginning of the operation of the ??? of Kalamata as an off-campus faculty of the ??? of Patras. The first department of the TEI of Kalamata was the Electrical Engineering Department which started its operation in the spring semester of the academic year 1987-88.
* The Department of Agricultural Product Technology within the School of Agricultural Technology, which began operating in the fall semester of the academic year 2000-2001
* The Department of Finance and Auditing at the School of Management and Economy, which began operating in the fall semester of the academic year 1999-2000.


Further, in 2004, the TEI of Kalamata established the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications as an off-campus department at [[Sparta (municipality)|Sparta]]. In 2009, the School of Health & Welfare Professions opened, comprising the Department of Speech Therapy (opened in 2009) and the Department of Radiation Technology, which will start admitting students from the academic year 2010-2011.
The Presidential Decree 502/1989/??? 215/3.10.1989/?.?' annulled the off-campus faculty of the TEI of Patras in Kalamata and established the TEI of Kalamata with the following two schools:

At the time of their establishment, the two Schools consisted of the following departments:

The Departments of Crop Production and Health & Welfare Unit Management first operated in the spring semester of the academic year 1989-90.

The Departments of Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture and of Local Government first operated in the fall semester of the academic year 1993-94.

The Presidential Decree 200/1999/??? 179/6.9.1999/?.?' founded two new departments at the ??? of Kalamata, one in each School:

The Department of Agricultural Product Technology within the School of Agricultural Technology which began operating in the fall semester of the academic year 2000-1,
The Department of Finance and Auditing at the School of Management and Economy which began operating in the fall semester of the academic year 1999-2000.
Finally in accordance with the Presidential Decree ?? 211/??? 189/14-10-2004/?.?', the TEI of Kalamata established the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications as an off-campus department at Sparti, Lakonia.

From the academic year 2009 -2010 the Departments of Agricultural Technology and Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture changed their names into Department of Food Technology and Organic Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture respectively.

From the academic year 2009 - 2010 the TEI of Kalamata also established a new department, the Department of Speech Therapy which together with the Department of Radiation Technology, which will start admitting students from the academic year 2010 - 2011 are part of the new School of Health & Welfare Professions.
