Template:Infobox Television Survivor Survivor: Africa was the third installment of the popular United States reality show Survivor. It was filmed during 2001 and aired from October 11, 2001 - January 10, 2002 on CBS. It was set in Kenya on the African continent.
The two initial tribes were Boran and Samburu (named for the real-life Borana and Samburu tribes). In the fifth episode, after 12 days, three members from each team were switched to the other team, in what became known as the first "twist" in the Survivor series. This emphasized that the players must be ready for the most sudden changes; future seasons would have similar twists. Eventually the two tribes merged into the Moto Maji tribe.
There was some controversy surrounding an immunity challenge in the finale episode. In a "Fallen Comrades" challenge, in which the contestants were quizzed on trivia regarding other players in the game who had been voted out, the final question was "Which female contestant has no piercings?" The official answer was Kelly Goldsmith, which eventual runner-up Kim Johnson answered and received the win for. Unbeknownst to the producers, however, contestant Lindsey Richter fit the question as well, which eventual third-place finisher Lex van den Berghe answered and was incorrectly marked wrong for. After this producer mistake had been found out, both van den Berge and fourth place finisher Tom Buchanan were awarded with the $100,000 runner-up fee instead of the traditional third and fourth place earnings.
Thirteen episodes were aired, plus a mid-season recap, a live reunion/interview with Bryant Gumbel after the finale, and a "where are they now" show. The winner, Ethan Zohn, was revealed on January 10, 2002.

Elimination Notes
- Diane Ogden - dehydrated and weak, she was voted out 6-2.
- Jesse Camacho - also weak, she was voted out 5-2.
- Carl Bilancione - the Samburu tribe was divided along age and work ethic lines. Carl/Linda/Teresa/Frank deadlocked with Lindsey/Brandon/Kim P/Silas at Tribal Council. Lindsey and Carl competed in a nature quiz tiebreaker, and Carl lost. Carl was targeted because the younger alliance thought he was least likely to know the nature questions.
- Linda Spencer - Linda was physically weak and was confrontational with the younger tribe members. Voted out 4-3.
- Silas Gaither - the first ever Survivor switch sent Silas, Frank and Teresa to a new team. Boran threw the immunity challenge to rid themselves of Silas, who went in a 5-1 vote.
- Lindsey Richter - Samburu had 3 original Boran and 3 original Samburu. Their votes deadlocked and Lindsey left due to the 4 votes she had obtained in episode 3.
- Clarence Black - long disliked by Boran due to his eating some food without asking them first, Clarence was kept around for tribal challenges. Entering individual immunity, he was considered a challenge threat and therefore voted out 8-2. (Teresa was the only other Survivor who had not voted for Clarence, due to an agreement if he let her win the immunity challenge.)
- Kelly Goldsmith - Her vote for Lex made him grow paranoid. He thought Kelly, a member of his alliance, had cast the vote. A betrayed Kelly made a pact with Kim P, Frank and Teresa, but Brandon had flipped to the Ethan/Kim J/Tom/Lex alliance, sending Kelly packing on a 5-4 vote.
- Brandon Quinton - viewed as a traitor to both sides, only Lex refused to vote for him. He went 6-2.
- Frank Garrison - the strongest member of the minority alliance, he left in a 6-1 vote.
- Kim Powers - younger and potentially stronger than Teresa, Kim left in a 5-1 vote.
- Teresa Cooper - Teresa finally told Lex the truth about that vote, and also told him Tom had suggested she vote for Lex. In spite of this revelation, Teresa was voted out 4-1.
- Tom Buchanan - the next intended target, Kim Johnson, won an immunity challenge (which was later disputed), and Tom left 3-1.
- Lex van der Berghe - Lex was too weak and sick to last in an endurance immunity, which went to Kim Johnson. Kim knew she would lose to either man, but she felt Ethan was more deserving of the million dollars, so she eliminated Lex.
- Kim Johnson - belittled by several jurors, Kim obtained 2 votes - Brandon and Kim Powers.
- Ethan Zohn - won 5-2, with the votes of Frank, Teresa, Tom, Lex and Kelly.
