Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor Gloria Tang Zhi-Kei (Traditional Chinese 鄧紫棋; Simplified Chinese 邓紫棋; Cantonese: Dang Zhi Kei: Mandarin pinyin: Dèng Zǐqí) (born 16 August 1991), commonly known by her stage name G.E.M., which stands for Get Everybody Moving [1], is a singer-songwriter from Hong Kong.

Biography

G.E.M. was born in Shanghai, however, she moved to Hong Kong at the age of 4[2][3]. G.E.M. was bought up in a musical family[4], her mother graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, her grandmother taught singing, her uncle played the violin and her grandfather played the saxophone for an orchestra. G.E.M.’s personal musical life began when she was 5[1] G.E.M. started to write songs, at the age of 10[1] G.E.M. entered many singing competitions[5] and won inter-school singing competitions[5] . When G.E.M. was 13, she achieved grade 8[6] in piano. In 2006, G.E.M. entered a competition called “Spice it Up”[7] where she won first place and was noticed by her current manager, Tan Chang, who offered her a contract with Hummingbird Music[1]. Therefore, she became a professional singer at the age of 16. G.E.M. graduated from True Light Girls' College[8]in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, she scored 21 points [9] in HKCEE. G.E.M. continued with her education at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Acoustics[10], as a part time student. However, her busy schedule made her unable to attend the Acoustics Courses frequently. Therefore, she decided to quite the course during the first half of 2009.[10]

G.E.M. was highly successful in her debut year 2008 as she won 10 major awards. G.E.M. released her first EP, G.E.M.; it featured the award winning song Where Did You Go. G.E.M. also appeared on screen for the first time on TVB’s game show “耳分高下”(Boom Boom Ba)[11]partnering Amigo (崔建邦) and on “美女廚房 2”(Beautiful Cooking 2)[12]she was with Tak Dik (狄易達). G.E.M. won the female newcomer singer Gold award from CRHK Ultimate 903 (903專業推介 sponsored by MANHATTAN ID 信用咭)[13] , where she became the first minor[14] to win the award. The media gave G.E.M. nicknames such as “巨肺少女”[15] and “巨肺小天后” literally meaning a Giant Lungs Girl and Giant Lungs Young Empress of Heaven respectively because of her vocal pitch（B♭3-E7).

During May in 2009, G.E.M. went to Los Angeles[16], California, to record her first studio album, 18, and has return back to Hong Kong since. In December, G.E.M. went to Toronto and Richmond Hill in Canada for her first mini-concert[17] in Canada; she also held an autograph session[18] in Pacific Mall, Canada

Accent

G.E.M.’s accent[19] can lead her to being mistaken for a foreign singer. Her unique accent[10] is caused by the shrinkage of her left jawbone, therefore, the jawbone and the teeth do not fit together. When G.E.M. speaks, the shrinkage causes air to leak out, so it will sound different. There are surgery operations to correct this problem, doctors’ advice not to undergo the surgery unless you are at least 21 when your body stops growing. However, G.E.M. has already announced that she has temporarily opted against the surgery due to the risk of the surgery which has risen in recent years, as well as the problem has not deteriorated[20].

18 Live

During 2009, G.E.M. held her first concert, 18 Live[35], on 20th and 22nd of November[36] in Hong Kong International Trade & Exhibition Centre Star Hall[1] (香港國際展貿中心). Originally, the concert should have only lasted two nights, however, due to its popularity an extra performance was added on the 22nd of November[37]. The concert also featured guests such as Jan Lamb[38] (林海峰), who has previously worked with G.E.M. for the song “食煙飲酒講粗口”and Justin Lo[39] (側田) who sang the first performance of “合唱歌” with G.E.M. in the concert.
