---|
John Paul Henry Daniel Richard Grimes and Edward Peter Anthony Kevin Patrick Grimes (born 16 October 1991)[1] are an Irish singing duo, performing under the name Jedward. Known for their distinctive blonde quiffs and unique performances, the identical twins have risen to fame since appearing as John & Edward on the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009, in a phenomenon described as the "Jedward paradox".[2]
Jedward's debut single, "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)" featuring Vanilla Ice, was released on 1 February 2010. They performed the song as a duet with Vanilla Ice at the National Television Awards ceremony on 20 January.[3] Released on Sony Music, it reached number two in the UK Singles Chart and number one in the Irish singles charts.[4][5] However, on 16 March, Jedward were dropped by Sony, having only had a one-single deal, and subsequently signed to Universal Records on a three-album deal the following day.[6] They embarked on their first national headline tour, the Jedward Tour 2010, from 6 April to 1 May. The twins have confirmed that their second single will be released on 28 May, with their album then coming out July 16th 2010.[7]
Jedward are managed by X Factor judge and former mentor Louis Walsh[8] and Ashley Tabor.[9]
Early life
Twin brothers John and Edward were born in Dublin, Ireland to computer technician John and teacher Susannah and were raised in Rathangan with their brother, law student Kevin. When the twins were ten years old, John and Susannah separated. Their sons then moved in with their mother in Lucan, Dublin, while their father continues to live in Rathangan. The boys have maintained a close relationship with both parents.[10][11]
The twins attended Scoil Bhríde National School in Rathangan and then King’s Hospital School for four years, but were constantly bullied for their hairstyles and love of pop music,[12] until they were moved to the Dublin Institute of Education. During their school years, they had competed in school talent shows, and were inspired by Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and Justin Timberlake. John and Edward are also athletes—as members of Dundrum South Dublin Athletic Club (DSD) in Dublin, they have competed in several tournaments in Ireland.[13] In addition, the twins worked briefly as games testers for Windows and Xbox 360 format holder Microsoft.[14]
The X Factor (2009)
In 2009, Jedward (then called John & Edward) appeared as a group at The X Factor auditions in Glasgow, speaking in what judge Simon Cowell described as American accents.[15] Cheryl Cole, another judge, asked them where they saw themselves in fifteen years and John replied, rather cheekily, "Well I see myself being older". When fellow judge Louis Walsh asked them why they wanted to be pop stars, Edward said "We came to see all the ladies... Cheryl and Dannii", then John yelled to the amused crowd, "Who wouldn't want girls shouting your name all over the place? Going John! Edward!... or whatever!" Cowell cut their slightly off-key rendition of the Backstreet Boys' As Long As You Love Me off after a single verse, calling them as "not very good, and incredibly annoying" and "two of the most (particularly John) irritating people... we've had out here in a long, long time." Danni Minouge described them as "Absolutely, the cockiest couple of singers I've ever come across... that don't have a record deal yet." Although Cowell voted "no", Minogue, Cole and Walsh decided they had potential and voted "yes".[16] John & Edward were at the centre of controversy at the bootcamp stage when they sang over fellow contestants, one of which was eliminated, while they went through to the 'Judges Houses' stage.
John & Edward progressed to the live shows in the series and were mentored by Walsh, but received some negative press on social networking sites such as Facebook, with many believing that he only put them through because both he and the twins are Irish, but also had an equal amount of fans that led to them surviving until week seven of the competition.
On 26 October, the twins were criticised for performing what was referred to as a "lewd" dance act at a window of the house where the X Factor contestants resided. The pair, who were naked save for a pair of boxers, grabbed their crotches while performing a Michael Jackson dance routine; the move was made in response to female fans outside exposing their breasts at the two brothers. The boys were later defended by a spokesman for the series, claiming that they were not acting in a sexually provocative manner.[17][18][19]
On 8 November, following a rendition of Ghostbusters,[20] John & Edward found themselves in the bottom two alongside fellow contestant Lucie Jones – both were in the position for the first time.[21] Cowell, who had the casting vote that night, decided to take the decision to deadlock. This resulted in Jones being sent home, despite rave reviews of her performance from the judges the previous night. Jones later said that the twins were "racked with guilt" over Cowell's decision, and have since apologised to her.[22]
During Queen week, while John & Edward sang a mashup of Queen's Under Pressure and Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby, Calvin Harris ran onto the stage with a pineapple on his head (poking fun at their quiffs, which have been said to resemble the tropical fruit[23]), before being wrestled out of the building by security men in an episode which was later hailed as "the most exciting X Factor ever".[24][25][26][27][28] Shortly after the incident, John & Edward were accused of having their singing drowned out by backing vocals, in a bid to hide their lack of singing talent. Producers of the show have insisted that the twins were not given extra help.[27]
On 22 November, John & Edward were eliminated from competition, after losing out in the judges' vote to Over-25s contestant Olly Murs when both acts were in the bottom two.[29] When the voting figures were revealed after the end of the show, it was revealed that they received more public votes than Murs. It was also shown that they were never in the top three of any public vote, contrary to newspaper reports that they gained the most votes in week three.[30]

Reactions
Jedward have been subjects of commentary, both pro and con, on social networking websites and in the media.[31] Many celebrities have also commented on the Jedward phenomenon.[32] Their fans include Calvin Harris,[24][25][26][27] Andy Murray,[33] Peaches Geldof,[34] Pixie Lott, Westlife[35] and Robbie Williams.[36] Politicians in the UK and Ireland have commented, and Prime minister David Cameron opted to buy their t-shirt and has said they were his favourite in the competition.[37][38][39] The two leading British political parties, Labour and the Conservatives, each released campaign posters parodying the twins.[40][41] Taoiseach Brian Cowen also backed the singers,[42] while Leona Lewis worried about them.[43][44] Queen drummer Roger Taylor opined that Jedward are "not great singers", but that "eight-year-olds love them... there's nothing wrong with that."[45]
Mentor Walsh told the News of the World: "I don't know how people can hate two nice young kids from Ireland. They've been edited really badly and come across as the people everyone loves to hate.... but they're just raw, naïve and innocent and they have the potential to be really good." [46] In the third week of the competition, when the studio audience heckled the twins, Walsh confronted them by saying: "Boo all you bloody want. I don't like bullying."[47] Cowell threatened to leave the country if the twins won the contest, but believed they could go on to have a successful music career.[48][49] Labour Leader Gordon Brown came under fire for describing John & Edward as "not very good", but later apologised.[37][50] leading Walsh to state, "Gordon Brown and Simon Cowell both have something in common. Neither of them know what the public want." Prime Minister David Cameron admitted he enjoyed watching the X Factor and that John & Edward were his favourites.[51] The Irish Independent called the pair "tone-deaf twins" while noting that the two were voted more popular than The Beatles in a teenage poll.[52]
Post X Factor
After their departure, John & Edward were signed to Modest! Management [53] and claim that they intend to "do different things in future...you never know what's going to happen. It's about keeping doors open". Singers Shakira and Lady Gaga, who had both performed on the series, expressed their desire to collaborate with them.[54][55] They appeared on The Late Late Toy Show on 27 November 2009 where John swore live on air.[56] The twins performed on The X Factor Live Tour from February until April 2010. Due to the overwhelming demand to see John & Edward, more dates were added,[57] and they are also doing a date at the Middlesbrough Empire as their first headlining concert.[citation needed] They were then signed to Louis Walsh's management label. Walsh came to an "amicable agreement" with Modest! (who represent all 12 finalists until the show ends), which has allowed him to take the twins on.[58]
On 5 December 2009, quoting the newspaper The Daily Mail, the website Digital Spy carried an article claiming that John and Edward were hauled off stage after being targeted with bottles during a nightclub performance. The X Factor finalists were halfway through a four-song show at Barnsley's Escapade nightclub when security stepped in and guided them away. They were expected to follow their performance with a meet-and-greet in the VIP area, according to the Daily Mail. The twins said that they were "disappointed" that the show was cut short, adding: "We didn't even get to sing Ghostbusters."[59]. The duo canceled two further nightclub appearances following this incident.[60]
They signed a £90,000 one-album contract with Sony BMG and to have their own ITV2 documentary.[61] On 20 January 2010, they performed at the National Television Awards. They sang a mashup of Under Pressure and Ice Ice Baby with rapper Vanilla Ice, who performed in the second half of the song. This, their debut single, was released on 31 January and the CD was released on 15 February.[citation needed]
On 16 March, it was reported that Jedward had been dropped by Sony,[62][63] but the following day, Universal Records signed the act to a three-album deal, with Louis Walsh remaining as the duo's manager.[64][65] Their debut album will be released on July 16, 2010. They completed a sold-out 27-date nationwide tour of Ireland which ran from 6 April to 1 May. The twins are currently promoting Abrakebabra in Ireland [66], and have been signed to relaunch the Shake 'n' Vac brand for Glade [67] [68]
On 26 April, it was reported in the Irish Sunday Mirror that Walsh had signed a €5 million deal to launch the twins in Japan, the largest ever sum for an act who had yet to release an album.[69]
Awards
Towards the end of 2009, John & Edward were nominated for "Funniest Double Act" at the Loaded Laftas Awards, competing with 6 Music presenters Adam and Joe, and comedy duos Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.[70] The ceremony was held on 27 January 2010, but Jedward lost out to Reeves and Mortimer.[71]
