The Motorola Backflip is a touchscreen smartphone released for the AT&T network on March 7, 2010. It runs the open source Google Android software.

General features

The phone is built on the Android Platform, Android 1.5. Motorola recently announced that the Android 2.1 software update will not come out until Q3 2010.
The phone has most Google apps removed and replaced with AT&T and Yahoo applications which cannot be deleted or uninstalled (though AT&T and Yahoo apps can be easily removed from the homescreens and replaced with Google apps).
Apps can only be run from the marketplace and sideloading is disabled.
The phone comes with "MOTOBLUR" which cannot be uninstalled or disabled. Workarounds have been discovered, though it requires the user's computer in order to accomplish this.
It has a full QWERTY keypad with an unusual "reverse flip" design. When the device is closed and the screen is visible to the user, the reverse side is the keypad itself. Opening the device causes the screen to flip so that it rests above the keypad.
The phone allows the user to interface with multiple networking sites integrated on the home screen.

Camera

The camera has five megapixels and a 4x zoom.
The camera has an LED flash and automatic focus.
It has a video capture rate of 24 fps.^[1]

Applications

AT&T has effectively blocked all non-market apps.^[2] This has created some controversy with users, as the non-market apps are often seen as a useful way to expand a phone's capabilities. The company is, however, allowing users to create their own apps in order to customize the phones to their personal needs.^[3]

Reviews

Michael Oryl, of "Mobileburn.com," likes the "Backtrack" mousepad on the back of the phone, but points out that large hands often activate it accidentally which can certainly be a problem.^[4] Victor Godinez, of The Dallas Morning News, suggests that the phone is aimed towards social networkers, points out that the price may be a bit much when compared to the memory of other options like the iPhone.^[5]
