Electronics City is one of India's largest electronic industrial parks, spread over 332 acres (1.3 km²) in Konappana Agrahara and Doddathogur villages, just outside Bangalore, India. It houses more than a hundred industries, including IT industry leaders such as Wipro, Hewlett-Packard, Infosys, Patni Computer Systems, CGI, Siemens, Yokogawa Electric etc.

History

The Electronics City was the brainchild of R.K. Baliga, the first Chairman and Managing Director of Keonics, Karnataka Electronics[1]. He dreamt of making Bangalore the Silicon Valley of India when he developed the concept of Electronic City. He did not live to see his dream materialize (he died in 1988). The liberalisation of the Indian economy in the early 1990s by the then Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and then Indian Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh helped Electronic City to become what it is today—the outsourcing capital of the world[2].

In 1997, the maintenance and upkeep of Electronic City was handed over by Keonics to ELCIA, the Electronics City Industries Association, having representatives from units in the enclave, for effective local governance and management.[3] Electronic City, now has 3 phases, Phase I, Phase II and Phase III. While Phase I is completely to the western side of Hosur Road, Phase II lies on either side.[4] With the development of Electronics City Phase 2, many more companies have set up shop here and this has led to enormous strain on the connecting roads from Bangalore. In November 2004 the government decided to construct a 9 kilometer long expressway to enable smoother traffic flow. The country's longest expressway was open for public on 22 Jan 2010, which eased the traffic as expected.

Information about Electronic City has been categorized in the neighbourhood portal ECity Bangalore [1]. About Electronic City[5], Map[6], Companies[7], Schools[8], Hospitals[9], Buses[10], Banks[11], Hotels[12], Real Estate[13] and other shops and services[14] are listed in the portal.
