Gears of War 3 is an upcoming third-person shooter video game developed by Epic Games, published by Microsoft Games Studios and due for release on Xbox 360 in April 2011.[1][2][3][4] It will be the third installment in the Gears of War series.[5]

Gameplay

Gears of War 3 will feature a four-player co-op mode[6] and the introduction of two playable characters--Anya Stroud, who appeared in the first two games as the team's control officer, and Jace Stratton, a battle-hardened soldier who appears in the comic series and is mentioned in the second game. The game will also feature new weapons, including a double-barreled shotgun and a Pendulum War Era Lancer, with a normal bayonet attached as compared to the chainsaw bayonet featured in Gears 1 and 2, was revealed in the trailer and discussed by Bleszinski. In the June Issue of Game Informer, Epic revealed other new weapons such as an Incendiary Grenade, a new heavy weapon called the Digger Launcher that fires explosive piranha creatures that dig through the ground at high speed before rising up to immolate enemy forces, a new recoilless rifle called the One Shot, that can take down any enemy with a single bullet (most likely to be rare in game).

Also, a fully controllable "Mech" suit will be available for use in certain parts of the game. On its left arm is a machine gun, and on its right is a rocket launcher. It has 2 modes, Stationary, and Assault. In Assault mode you control it like you do Marcus, it can even Curb Stomp downed enemies. In Stationary mode, it locks into position and deploys its armor, as well as cover for other Gears from its legs. This Geared Up ride is dubbed the "C.O.G. Silverback".[7].

It has also been revealed that hip-hop star Drake will voice Jace Stratton.[8]

Multiplayer

Gears of War 3 will include a mode called Beast Mode. It is the opposite of Horde Mode in Gears of War 2. In Horde Mode, you were the COG combating the Locust, but in GOW3's Beast Mode, you are the locust combating the COG.

Synopsis

Eighteen months after the fall of Jacinto, the war for survival rages on. The Gears are now living aboard a converted aircraft carrier called the Raven's Nest. The government has disbanded and the survivors from the first two games now call a makeshift flotilla of ships their home. The imulsion that once powered Sera's great cities has infected and mutated members of the Locust Horde, causing them to become Lambent. Making matters worse, these Lambent have begun evolving into a new enemy that threatens both the Locust and what's left of humanity. With survivors scattered and civilization in ruins, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race. Several characters will return for this final chapter, including Dom, Baird, Cole, Jace, and Anya, a former Delta Squad communications officer now turned battle-hardened soldier, who fights along side Marcus and Delta Squad.[9]

According to Cliff Bleszinski, the game will "answer the majority of the questions that players have about the history of the world and what's going on".[10] The story is being written by noted Star Wars Expanded Universe novel author Karen Traviss, who has authored two Gears novels and is working on the next three.[11]

Marketing

Gears of War 3 was officially unveiled on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon by Cliff Bleszinski, with a teaser trailer.[12][citation needed] Before the official reveal, an ad for the game was accidentally leaked on the Xbox Live platform.[13] The song featured in the trailer is 'Heron Blue' by Sun Kil Moon.[14] The teaser trailer was also unveiled on the Xbox 360 Dashboard on April 14, 2010. A live demo was presented at Microsoft's keynote presentation at E3 2010, showing off several new features, including weapon swapping, and use of the Pendulum-era Lancer's bayonette.
